Wonderful to read for an understanding of Ukraine

From pre-history to Independence in 1991, this book surveys the history of Ukraine and its people. It is unique in not only portraying the history of the Ukrainian people but also includes the other peoples who live or have lived in the land now known as Ukraine.
The organization of the book is chronological with 49 chapters divided into ten parts. Each part covers a significant period in Ukrainian history: Pre-Kievan Times; the Kievan Period; the Lithuanian-Polish Period; the Cossack State; the Hetmanate; Ukraine in the Russian Empire; Ukraine in the Austrian Empire; World War I; the Interwar Years; and, World War II & the Postwar Years. Forty-two black-and-white maps help illustrate the concepts described in the text. Also included are thirty-six textual inserts which provide lengthy quotes of important documents. Sometimes these feel redundant because the author has described so well the events highlighted by the inserted texts.
For readers to whom 700 pages of Ukrainian history is not enough and who want to learn more about specific events or periods described in this book, Magocsi provides a forty page bibliographic essay called: For Further Reading. One of the great stumbling blocks for English-speaking readers who want to learn Ukrainian history is the fact that so many Ukrainian sources have not been translated. A great feature of this bibliography is that the vast majority of the works listed are in English.
Ukrainian history is complex. This book, although daunting to read because of its size and depth of coverage, can help the student of Ukrainian history untangle the puzzles of Ukraine and its people. It is a great reference work that belongs in the library of anyone interested in the subject.

Excellent Reference on Ukrainian History

Mr. Magocsi's "History of Ukraine" often takes a second billing to Mr. Subtelny's "Ukraine: A History" - and I think, unfairly. Both have a lot to offer, and frankly, no passionate student of Ukrainain history should choose one over the other. He or she should get both. A wealth of information, and first rate scholarship are impressive. Mr. Magocsi has done a first rate job. Mychajlo Hrushevsky would approve of both, and we should too.

History of Ukraine and Sweeping Narrative of Eastern Europe

Ukraine has a unique history in that it is difficult to pinpoint when Ukraine emrged - from its Kieven Rus roots, under the rule of the Duchy of Lithuania and then the Commonwealth of Poland/Lithaunia and then split in half between Muscovy and Poland and all the while the Ottomans at their doorstep. But Magocsi does a great, non biased job of telling the story of Ukraine and the overlapping history of her neighbors and conquerors (Lithuania, Poland, Russia and others) up to the point of her independence. I love this book! Each chapter is about 10 pages or so long and not one page is wasted - each chaulk full of info and history leading up to the next chapter with an ominous warning or prediction of things to come. The book flows nicely and I could not put it down! Please add this book to your volumes of Eastern European History!

About the Author
Jamil Baz is the chief investment strategist of GLG, a London-based hedge fund. Prior to holding this position, he was a portfolio manager with PIMCO in London, a managing director in the Proprietary Trading Group of Goldman Sachs, chief investment strategist of Deutsche Bank, and executive director of Lehman Brothers fixed income research division. Dr Baz teaches financial economics at Oxford University. He has degrees from the London School of Economics (M.Sc.), MIT (S.M.), and Harvard University (A.M., Ph.D.).

Professor George Chacko has split his time between the academic and commercial worlds during his career. His past commercial experience has included work at Accenture and Prudential Investments. Most recently, he was a managing director heading fixed income sales and trading at State Street Bank, a managing director in pension asset management at IFL, and the chief investment officer of Auda Alternative Investments. He has co-founded and sold three financial services businesses over his career. He is currently the managing partner of Confluentis Investments. His past academic experience has been at Harvard Business School, where he served as a professor in the finance department for ten years. He also served as a visiting professor at the Indian School of Business. He is currently a professor in the finance department at Santa Clara University. His research interests have been in the areas of fixed income and derivatives research, portfolio choice and construction, and the microstructure of financial markets. He has a BS from MIT in Electrical Engineering, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and an MA and PhD from Harvard University in Business Economics.

Glad I found it

One of the author, Baz, gave me a copy of this book when it came out and it went to sleep in my library as I was not in a finance mood. I forgot about it until this week as I was stuck on a problem related to risk-neutral pricing and the Girsanov theorem concerning changes in probability measure. I looked at every passage on the the subject until I hit on it. Then I realized that I should have read it before: it is a condensed, but extremely deep , and complete exposition of the subject of theoretical finance.
No financial book has the clarity of this text.
Other quant books do not have such notions as "pricing kernel" and economic theoretical matters. I would recommend it as a necessary piece of the "quant" toolkit. Every quant should have it as a background tool as the usual quant literature is standalone and devoid of these concepts.

A complete package for practice and theory

This book draws on the PhD course that Prof. Chacko teaches at Harvard Business School and the substantial real-world experience with derivatives of both authors to offer a solid package that is useful for both theory and practice. There are other books with clear and rigorous mathematics (e.g. Wilmott), variety of methodologies for pricing (e.g. Neftci) and guides to practical hedging (e.g. Taleb), but this one presents all three components and is therefore a must-have for any serious derivatives shop. Highly recommended.

Financial derivatives are the products traded by the financial industry, banks and trading companies; a contract whose payoff depends on the behavior of a benchmark; financial instruments whose value is derived from a number of underlying variables.

Examples: futures, options, and swaps ; or other tradable assets, e.g., stocks or commodities; or such non-tradable items such as the temperature (weather derivatives), the unemployment rate, or any kind of (economic) index.

Since the industry has undergone a recent explosive growth, so have the number of variety of books covering the subject.
The book by Baz & Chacko is useful for readers wanting a mathematical introduction.

Covered are mathematical tools, financial valuation, financial models, asset pricing, Black-Scholes.

On the math side: Ito's lemma, and a systematic presentation of stochastic differential equations; and dynamical programming.
There are other similar books are out there, roughly the same level, and roughly the same emphasis; for example by Willmott-Howison-Dewynne, and by Capinski-Zastawniak.

A sweet and sexy romance about finding life and love again

The title of this story, and my knowledge of the author's other works immediately made me assume that this was going to be an erotic historical romance. It isn't - instead it's a lovely, thoughtful and interesting story (with some sexy love scenes) of widowed Amelia, who finds a soldier in the street suffering from amnesia. She cares for him, and as he slowly regains his memory, a mystery remains - who is he, what really happened to him, and how did he end up back in England. Along the way, Amelia and Marco find themselves falling for each other, and when they arrange a marriage of convenience, it soon turns to more. I really enjoyed the story as it moved at a good pace, with the romance and the drama intertwined. Actually I had a hard time putting it down, because I wanted to know about Marco's past as much as he did! Amelia has her own secrets that gradually get revealed too, and the two of them were really a perfect match by the time all was said and done. It's a heartwarming tale of love found, and a sexy and entertaining read. 4 stars.

I love everything I have ever read written by Kate Pearce. This book was no exception. Kate's historic books are rich in history, characterization and sensuality. She teases our senses and creates visions that will stay with you long after the story has ended. I really didn't want to let go of these two people as they fit so well together and completed each other. They both needed each other and I am so glad they found each other in Kate's imagination.

This is the conclusion of the Diable Delamere series with Amelia Smith who is the widow of a fallen war soldier she defied her family and married. She's back in England living had to mouth with her late husband's aunt as her family disowned her when she married. She finds an unconscious man in the village that appears to be a war veteran. He finally wakes with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The story unfolds as Amelia and Marco/Marcus finds clues to his history and in the process he "awakens" Amelia to getting on with her life as she's been treading water with kind and lonely Aunt Betty. The intrigue and mystery of this story kept me reading. I had read #2.5 Loving Michael and this story drove me to read #1 Educating Elizabeth which I discovered I already on my Nook in the A Taste Of Scandal Box Set. I'll have to get #2 Redeeming Jack as these two stories are intertwined in the conclusion of the series in this book.

This is the story of Amelia Smith , a widow who lost her husband during the war and has made it her mission in life to lend a helping hand to soldiers who need it. So when she happens to come by a soldier, Marco , unconscious in the street, she immediately goes into caretaker mode and takes him home.

Now you guys already know this is a romance story so it's gonna get sexy. Although not as erotic as Kate's usual works, Marco and Amelia still gave off plenty of sparks :) Amelia is such a beautiful soul ... gah, I just didn't want this story to end!

The suspense of the story is quite addictive. You can't help but be completely invested. As Marco and Amelia both search for answers of his past, you will be right there with them ... wanting badly to know the who what when of it all! Kate created characters in Amelia and Marco that were absolutely perfect for one another. Both with baggage. Both searching for answers. Both just incredibly suited for one another. Both developing and growing thru each other towards a well deserved HEA!

I absolutely LOVED this story and I highly recommend it! It should be noted that altho the story of Amelia and Marco can be read as a standalone, there are intertwined characters thru this entire series and I highly recommend you start from the beginning with Educating Elizabeth, which introduces the suspenseful arc that flows thru all 4 stories in this series.

What is tango? Dance, music, and lyrics of course, but also a philosophy, a strategy, a commodity, even a disease. This book explores the politics of tango, tracing tango’s travels from the brothels of Buenos Aires to the cabarets of Paris and the shako dansu clubs of Tokyo. The author is an Argentinean political theorist and a dance professor at the University of California at Riverside. She uses her “tango tongue” to tell interwoven tales of sexuality, gender, race, class, and national identity. Along the way she unravels relations between machismo and colonialism, postmodernism and patriarchy, exoticism and commodification. In the end she arrives at a discourse on decolonization as intellectual “unlearning.”Marta Savigliano's voice is highly personal and political. Her account is at once about the exoticization of tango and about her own fate as a Third World woman intellectual. A few sentences from the preface are indicative: “Tango is my womb and my tongue, a trench where I can shelter and resist the colonial invitations to ‘universalism,’… a stubborn fatalist mood when technocrats and theorists offer optimistic and seriously revised versions of ‘alternatives’ for the Third World, an opportunistic metaphor to talk about myself and my stories as a success' of the civilization-development-colonization of Am�rica Latina, and a strategy to figure out through the history of the tango a hooked-up story of people like myself. Tango is my changing, resourceful source of identity. And because I am where I am—outside—tango hurts and comforts me: ‘Tango is a sad thought that can be danced.’”Savigliano employs the tools of ethnography, history, body-movement analysis, and political economy. Well illustrated with drawings and photos dating back to the 1880s, this book is highly readable, entertaining, and provocative. Tanog dancers beware!

This book is basically unreadable. I tried several times to wade through it and eventually gave up. I am sure there are some valuable points here but they are under deep layers of academic self indulgence. Tango dancers beware! This book is more about political theory than the dance.

History of Tango Including Social and Emotional Aspects

Histories of the Argentine tango are often polemical. Questions of propriety, national identity and social position have colored and distorted the perceptions of both authors and readers. In this tradition, Marta E. Savigliano, Assistant Professor of dance history at the University of California, Riverside, explores the history of the Argentine Tango as a dance form using sex/gender, wealth/class and color/race categories.

As a woman, a feminist and a dancer of tango, Savigliano is willing to investigate aspects of the tango that both attract and disturb many people.
What is different and most provocative in Savigliano's history of the tango is her exploration of the sex-gender dynamics. Her description of tango includes its emotional context:

"As a powerful representation of male/female courtship, stressing the
tension involved in the process of seduction, the tango performance has
gone through several successive adjustments as it has been adopted and
legitimized by the upper classes and by Western hegemonic cultures."

Savigliano's legitimization road introduces us to upper-crust Argentine lads slumming in the brothels of Buenos Aires, takes us through left-bank Paris of the 1910s, explains romantic reinterpretations of tango as it became THE dance of the Argentine middle class by the 1940s. We even visit more recent Japanese tango revivals.

Is the tango a display of unequal male-female power relationships? Who seduces whom?

Savigliano speaks as someone who knows well the tango, notably the heart and soul and the passion-tension in the dance. She views the tango woman not as a victim, but as a co-conspirator. The follower may not lead the tango, but she often knows more about what's happening than the leader:

"Translated into tango choreographic terms, [Tango] lyrics suggest that
milonguitas could provoke the dance (call the attention of their target
through their glances, figure, and dancing abilities) and tempt the
class/race status quo into motion, but they would never lead or "mark"
(marcar) in the moment at which the special steps were performed.

So Savigliano's answer is that the follower provokes and teases, and maybe
controls the leader's heart and intentions, even while the leader is
choreographing the dance, in spite of the fact that the economic power relationship may be quite unequal.

There are not many English language histories of the tango, so Savigliano's effort is a welcome contribution. On the whole, the writing style is accessible for an intelligent reader, although sometimes the academic approach is over-stressed and other times it is too artistic or impressionable.

The strength of this book is that human emotions and the male-female dynamic of tango have been brought into its historical analysis. The tango dance is quite unusual in this regard because without the experience of dancing tango an armchair historian simply persuing primary-source material would miss some of the most important elements no matter how deep the investigation.

In response to the reviewer below - why a non-academic would bother to try and read a book containing the phrase "political economy of passion" in its title is beyond me. What did s/he think it would be like?

This is one of those books that is absolutely incredible for those with the formation to read it, and probably completely meaningless to those without: those who don't have a graduate education ought to be scared off by the title, as intended. Don't blame a book because you don''t happen to fall within its target audience: simply look for something that's more within your abilities.

He's done it again.

LaBute best short play collection yet (Yes, LaBute fans, even better than Filthy Talk).

LaBute is evolving as a playwright. He is treating his characters and their personal struggles with a bit more emotional tenderness, a bit more understanding, and still packing his scripts with gritty dialogue for actors to chew up and spit right at their fellow performers.

The title play, though the twist may be foreseen by some, provides one of the best endings to a one-act play I've read in a long, long time. The other plays follow suit, varying greatly in premise and exchange. I especially enjoyed the two-person plays In The Beginning and A Guy Walks Into a Bar, and the searing new monologue The Pony of Love. LaBute has a magical means of crafting short works: he's one of the best.

If you didn't enjoy Reasons to Be Happy and are wondering if LaBute has momentarily lost the magic, fret not. If this collection is any indication of where my favorite playwright's work is headed, I'm ecstatic about the future.

The Mystery Confucius Couldn't Solve, written by two Americans, inspired me to investigate the pictographs of Chinese scripts that related to Divinity. Consequently, the scripts prompted me to examine their etymology deeper to understand why Cangjie created them that way. In the Holy Bible, the claim of Eden's location in Yunnan, China was another jolt. For nearly two decades, I was a credit underwriter on overseas risks. I was also an evangelist doing church outreach and planting works for some years. Both of these experiences provided me with the competency and rich philosophy needed to undertake this investigation and other works.
