About the Author
Neil LaBute's plays include bash, In a Forest, Dark and Deep, and Reasons to be Happy. His films include In the Company of Men, Your Friends and Neighbors, The Shape of Things, Obsession, Some Velvet Morning, and Dirty Weekend. He is a 2013 recipient of a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

He's done it again.

LaBute best short play collection yet (Yes, LaBute fans, even better than Filthy Talk).
LaBute is evolving as a playwright. He is treating his characters and their personal struggles with a bit more emotional tenderness, a bit more understanding, and still packing his scripts with gritty dialogue for actors to chew up and spit right at their fellow performers.
The title play, though the twist may be foreseen by some, provides one of the best endings to a one-act play I've read in a long, long time. The other plays follow suit, varying greatly in premise and exchange. I especially enjoyed the two-person plays In The Beginning and A Guy Walks Into a Bar, and the searing new monologue The Pony of Love. LaBute has a magical means of crafting short works: he's one of the best.
If you didn't enjoy Reasons to Be Happy and are wondering if LaBute has momentarily lost the magic, fret not. If this collection is any indication of where my favorite playwright's work is headed, I'm ecstatic about the future.
