Good for filling in the gaps

Wrote the GMAT twice before turning to this book after I wrote the exam the second time. Prior to this I had used GMAT Prep, the GMAT Prep additional question pack 1, the Official Guide, the Manhattan set of 8 strategy guides, and of course practice tests.

My biggest criticism of this book is that the difficulty levels, even for the so-called 'Challenge' problems, don't get that high. Manhattan GMAT quant questions can be brutal, often harder than many actual GMAT questions because they tend to be heavy on calculation in addition to being tricky. As a result, MGMAT has rightly developed a reputation for being the go-to choice for practicing quant. TGMATM problems seem pretty basic by comparison and a little too easy.

TGMATM adds value in two areas: repetitive drills that drive certain points home and its innovative coverage of minor question types. These drill questions are often pretty simple, but they make doing certain types of calculations second-nature while helping you get a 'fingertip feel' for certain kinds of manipulations. Weighted averages, permutations and combinations come to mind.

Even after all the prep I had done prior to picking up TGMATM, there were still quite a few 'Aha!' moments because this book has a knack for demystifying minor question types and trick questions that can be solved in any of several ways but defy ready categorization, as well as taking novel approaches to topics I thought I already had a pretty good handle on. It's a testament to the value of returning to the basics without simply passively reviewing tired old flash cards.

To me its real value lies either in filling in the gaps for someone who has been around the block already, or serving as the foundation for more rigorous GMAT prep if you're fresh out the gate.

It's not a bad place to start, and it's a pretty good place to fine-tune, but it is NOT comprehensive and all-encompassing, which I think was supposed to be the goal.

The most complete GMAT Math Guide hands down but not very friendly

I am the founder of GMAT Club and top 1000 reviewer on Amazon - I have seen a lot of GMAT books and also reviewed pretty much all of them. This is a single most complete book that includes everything you need to get a solid score on the quant (you should also get the OG 12, and the author recommends it as well). It is also not a book that just came out of nowhere, Total GMAT math has been available as an ebook for about 4 years now and I am glad to see it is finally available in the print format. However, it does assume a greater level of general math knowledge as well as commitment than most GMAT books - that's what you get with a comprehensive book

The get the most of this book: 1) Read the first intro chapters including the one on "how to use this book" 2) Take each suggestion seriously 3) Make your own notes in a separate notebook 4) Always time yourself with a timer and keep a GMAT error log

Strengths:
- 300+ GMAT style questions
- Good explanations with diagrams
- The book is writen as an instruction manual with many insights and tips n the chapters/explnations
- Over 500 Exercises (non-gmat style questions)
- Covers all topics test on the gmat including probabilyt, statistics, etc without going too far
- Each question are gets a section (inequalities, absolute value, work problems, etc)
- Includes 100 of 700+ questions
- Good strategy suggestions including focusing on concepts rather than solving thousands of questions, writing question information down, and mental math concepts
- Good paper and formulas are done well

Weaknesses:
- The chapters are structured in a slightly unorthodox pattern. The book starts with algebra, then goes into geometry, then work problems, and then number properties. I felt that moving number properties closer to the beginning of the book would make more sense. I also felt the chapters were a bit choppy (only a few pages long) but that's my preference
- Could be intimidating: the text is very tightly packed with just a handful of illustrations. (see my uploaded image for details)
- No highlighting or a summary sheet - would be great to have formulas or key concepts highlighted on pages or at the end of the book
- Copyright and website address on every page - gets a bit old and distracting
- No OG recommendations table - would be helpful to have a list of questions from the OG for additional practice after each chapter
- Table of content is not usable (11 pages)

Bottom line: This is the ultimate book for math on the GMAT. If you are looking for a 50 on the quant, this is the book to get. However, this may be too much for some who are not seeking to spend 6 weeks on this book. Let not the price scare you - it is on the low side of what other prep companies charge for the entire math book set.

big time Quant improvement!

I ordered this book to prepare for a GMAT retake. I went from 580 to 640 (Q34 to Q40) in one month of prep (I know I'm not a 700+ genius scorer, so I don't know how useful this is for those super high-level students out there) and I have this book to thank. Mr. Sackmann has a way of explaining the problems without being wordy or confusing - his language made things click, especially in the probablilty and combination/permutation sections. Each section offers an explanantion (including basics, how often the type of problem appears in the test, useful tricks, etc), then a 'drill' section followed by practice word problems and a challenge if appropriate.

The layout makes it easy to focus on your weak areas and there are plenty of practice questions to help raise your ability level. The drills are particularly useful if, like me, you sometimes screw up a problem not due to misunderstanding the question or not knowing HOW to solve it, but in the actual solving. I made remarkably fewer math errors after completing every drill.
It took me about a week to work through it, averaging 2-3 hours a day. However, I would also recommend the OG as the question styles are a bit different than what the GMAT would ask.

The only thing I would change is the spacing of the text. I like working the problems on the page and would have loved a little more scratchwork space. But the content is fantastic and a great way to polish your quant skills!

Good book but there are quite a few mistakes

We had to buy this book for school. It was frustrating because there were a lot of errors. For some that would be a good thing because you learn but trying to figure out the error from other sources. When you're under a deadline to get something turned in, it's not a good thing. There were also referenced files that were missing or found in a folder from a later chapter. Overall it's a great learning tool. All the files they provide on the DVD are great for learning. They provide a before and after for each lesson to make it easier to figure out what you did wrong. It's a really great reference book as well. I find myself referencing quite a bit and I will continue to use it after I'm finished my class.

A good book but awkwardly written

This book does not teach you 3ds Max but gives a good reference of the features with demo projects.
I felt the book was written backwards with animation first and building objects and texturing in different order. I am taking an online course on 3ds Max and the course first start with interface, primitives, modifiers, and then texturing. The animation portion was mentioned later after you have the knowledge on how to create something. This book needs its chapters to be rearrange a bit to make things flow more logically--you shouldn't have to access further back into the book to know how to texture something.
Maybe I should have given this book a higher rating but part of a good book should be on the flow of things.

Good Light Reading

I bought this book with the hopes it would have a strong few chapters on rigging, creating controllers, and skinning characters, but I've found those characters it to be extremely generalized. On the brighter side the rest of the content in this book seems solid from what I've thumbed through.

Interesting concept

This is a very interesting concept; a modification of a chart pattern that most trading platforms provide. It seems to help visualize a trend faster and easier than using the standard method; unfortunately, if you don’t know code or can’t program your trading platform, you won’t be able to use it real time.
Working with excel and other hand methods is very tedious and prone to errors. Professionally trading that way is riskier than using a good electronic platform.
I was able to code it into TradeStation and it works amazingly well. However, after backtesting the system I found out it works well during a trending market; during non-trending periods the system will lose money.

Interesting, but useless

To introduce Heikin Ashi Charts is a great idea.
But to use spreadsheets for this and for trading decisions is deeply rooted in the last century.
Any halfway decent online broker has better charting capabilities and tools, usually offered for free.
No need to waste your time with spreadsheet manipulation.
There are better ebooks on Heikin Ashi charts around which show you practical ways how to trade them effectively.

Beautifully simple, unique system

I find the more complex the system (especially with trading) the more problems can arise - the author does a great job of explaining a unique and simple technical system which doesn't try to predict the markets but follows price action - overall achieving around a 50% strike rate but most importantly over the long run each winning trade is on average twice the size of each losing trade making it a profitable and reliable system as these results are shown across a range of markets. Recommended reading.

Rob Zachariason is an Instructor at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, and an Instructor for the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. Rob is a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the International Association of Electrical Inspectors, and the National Education Association. He carries a Master Electrician's license in North Dakota and Minnesota. Rob worked as an electrician for 10 years before becoming a full time instructor.

The Holy CEO is an account of the growth of a business and the spiritual evolution of its European founder - Christian Fabre alias Pranavananda Brahmendra Avadhuta.

I found this book to be mildly interesting.The story of the business seemed like the everyday tale of most businesses anywhere in the world.I also did not find not much evidence of Christian Fabre's spiritual struggle - it seemed like he had a straight forward spiritual blossoming.

Apart from the giving us an account of how a white business man had also become a respectable sadhu, this book does not have much that is truly interesting to communicate.

At first glance, this book's photos and illustrations, which are just as important as the text in an exercise book, seem dated and bland. But a reading of the text and a closer examination of the illustrations reveal that what makes this yoga text different and worthwhile is the author's commitment to tying yoga's spiritual aspects to its physical components. Farhi (The Breathing Book) discusses the "Ten Living Principles," or the yamas ("wise characteristics") and the niyamas ("codes for living soulfully"), and also considers the importance of the asanas ("postures") in grounding spirituality in the body. However, Farhi does far more than provide descriptions and illustrations of postures. At the beginning of each new section, she has readers move through one or two core poses. She then asks them to focus on the way they feel physically while performing the pose. Using these core poses, she moves on to postures of greater complexity while allowing for different levels of ability. One possible problem for beginners is her use of posture names to describe poses that involve movement from one posture to the next (e.g., the sun salutation or the downward dog). Recommended for public libraries as well as academic libraries where yoga is a part of the curriculum, this may also be a worthwhile purchase for hospital or health sciences libraries.

If I could only buy one yoga book.

I'm a forty-seven year old man who has been practicing yoga for less than a year. In that time I have read quite a few books on the subject. I was surprised to find so many opinions, theories, teachers, schools, and styles. Yet they all seemed to fall short of giving really clear and understandable explanations of the mechanics of body movement. When I read "Yoga, Mind, Body &Spirit" I quickly recognized it to be, by far, the most logical and reasonable approach to yoga study that I had found. Exercises, refered to as Inquiries, help you to learn for yourself the principles that underlie the practice of yoga. This allows you to begin to fashion a practice tailored to your unique body and its current condition. If I had to choose one book to try and explain the techniqes and essence of yoga, this would be the one.

This is the yoga book I've been waiting for. I am an active middle age athlete/busy professional who has found that yoga makes me feel good and so I've purchased many books and videos in my efforts to learn more on my own.
For me, Yoga Mind, Body & Spirit pulls together the disciplines (moving principles, anatomy, yamas/niyamas, mediatation) one needs to understand to realize the true benefits of yoga practice. The communication of these areas through the written word, photographs and illustrations (incredible helpful), and organization and layout makes every page a gem. As a child I practices yoga for years, since then I grew up and became totally plugged and lazy to exercise. My job and life didn't allow for any kind of exercise. As my energy decreased I remembered my childohood. I bought this book and it changed my life. It is by far the best yoga book I have read. It gives full descritions for all levels of proficency, describing in detailed poses breaths and props that may be needed for each move. It also shows illustrations of what to do and what not to do. I liked the anatomy digrams that further explain what positions your body should be in. I also liked thefocus on getting to know your body, and yoga being a 'dance' rather than exercise.

It’s one of those books that isn’t widely known today—it came and went at the time of its publication, reviewed well but never garnering widespread attention—but continues to be cited by other writers as groundbreaking (George Pelecanos wrote the glowing introduction to the 2001 reprint edition). It’s a post-Vietnam novel as much as it is crime fiction, much like Robert Stone’s Dog Soldiers (1974). Its dual protagonists are Richard Bone, once a middle-class midwestern ad man, now a dissolute California drifter, and Alex Cutter, a crippled vet with a serious grudge against the corporate world. Bone sees a man he thinks might be tycoon J. J. Wolfe stuffing something into a trash can. That something turns out to be a hooker, and at Cutter’s prodding, Bone and Cutter attempt to find out if it really was Wolfe who did the stuffing. We know from the start that nothing good can come of their investigation. Cutter would have us think that nailing this one rich guy would be a small symbolic step toward righting a world that went seriously wrong with Vietnam. Bone, like the reader, knows differently but can’t help following the scent. There is a peculiar kind of despair that sinks into the bone marrow of damaged war survivors—film noir was born out of that despair in the post-WWII era—and Thornburg nails the Vietnam version. Dead Souls

One of the best depictions of mid-'70s America I've come across, this powerful novel was written when the country was struggling to recover from the Vietnam War and remains as a vivid reminder of that time. Set mostly in Santa Barbara, the story follows two men firmly stuck in cycles of self-destruction. Bone dropped out of the corporate life and left his wife and kids in Minnesota to float around California as a gigolo, while Cutter came back from Vietnam minus an arm and a leg and teeters on the brink of insanity. Both are utterly disillusioned with the world around them and spend a great deal of time drinking and trying to blot out their rapidly suburbanizing, strip-mallifying, consumerist surroundings. The third member of this circle of dead souls is the sarcastic, Quaalude popping Mo, Cutter's live-in girlfriend and mother to his baby.
The whole book reads like one big hangover-the party (late '60s free love, rebellion, Vietnam, etc.) is over, and someone's gotta pay. One evening Bone unknowingly witnesses a murderer disposing of a victim, and what he half saw leads to a half-baked scheme to make some money. In another writer's hands, this could have lead to a comic caper, but Thornburg is intent on showing the county's loss of innocence through the bitter, maimed, and reckless Cutter, and his guilt-ridden and aimless buddy Bone. One problem I had with the story was the friendship between the two men. The book unfolds from Bone's perspective, and it's hard to fathom why he keeps returning to Cutter's side, other than guilt and/or a self-destructive streak.
In any event, the book starts fairly slow and there were a few times I considered ditching it. By the second half though, the lean prose gets more and more compelling, and the dilemmas get a bit more interesting. The final quarter or so takes the two men on a road trip from California to the Ozarks, in possible pursuit of the murderer. The climax is awfully gripping in a "y'all ain't from around here" Deliverance kind of way, and the final sentence packs a huge punch. ...Still, book's theme-that the Vietnam war did irreparable damage to the American psyche and values, and led to an America where money and consumption are king and justice is a mirage-emerges in full color, and the book remains an important picture of the empty '70s.
Note: This was made into a great dark film called Cutter's Way.

Read This One It's a Real Find!

The film is a neglected classic, and the novel it was inspired by is likewise. It will hook you as a good thriller does, yet also profoundly engage you with it's extraordinary mixture of the poetic and the grittily, absurdly real. The Characterisation is rich and broad and constantly surprising - tough yet warm - and it is stylistically muscular in a Chandleresque way, without ever becoming arch. Touching movingly on so many issues from some extremely archetypal relationships to the state of post-Vietnam America, Thornburg takes you on a rollercoaster ride that you won't want to get off. Finally, as an exploration of messed-up masculine insecurity it is devastating and compulsive with that rare thing in such books,great female characters! Read the book, see the film - you won't forget either.

Richard Bone is a handsome stud who uses women to his advantage. Alex Cutter is bitter Vietnam war vet: Crippled, relentlessly articulate, and seemingly always drunk, they make an unlikely friendship. That is until on day Bone witnesses a man dumping a dead body of a young woman; a man answering the description of a powerful business tycoon. So, pushed on by Cutter's vengeful maxims about the rich, they both decide to investigate in the hope of bringing the tycoon to book. But neither of them will ever guess the savage payoff. A powerful novel that deals with post-vietnam malaise and corporate power, this is highly recommended.

Awesome even if you aren't married

This book has totally changed my view of God. I've been a Christian for 22 years but I really like this book because it shows how God's character is consistent throughout scripture and in our lives as well. Having a better understanding of God has helped me have a stronger relationship with Him and see my life with a different perspective.

Cons: The book was written in the 70s so it assumes you are a stay-at-home mom with kids.I think that this is a great topic for men to study as well, and as a single working woman I see it as relevant to my own life as well. Also, avoids some of the more difficult topics like God's wrath.

That being said, I am recommending this book to all my close friends!!

Don't miss this awe-inspiring treasure of a study!!

This Bible study can be done alone or in a group. It will cause you to look at your God through the eyes of scripture and God's involvement with man. In a group, it is especially inspirational as you will be moved to a spirit of worship with the others who have been looking closely at this amazing God who loves us so very much! This study is NOT new, but it is a treasure for eternity. I did it 12 years ago, and then again last year, and was so blessed BOTH times!

An oldie but goodie

This study on God's attributes is excellent. It was first published in 1979, but it is timeless. I used the questions to supplement another study on the same subject. Questions in this study were very appropriate for the study I was leading because it had lots of Scripture references in it. The other study I used, sold here on Amazon, is titled "God Is", which also has a website where one can view small group DVDs to accompany the lessons, as well as full length sermons on the subject. I loved both studies!

Kinda Naughty..

I liked it. There was some general knowledge but also some advanced strategies for seducing and understanding the genders. Must say I found the sex facts both shocking and satisfying, probably good for anybody who wants to optimize success with men or women. the pheromone information of menstrual cycles and male hair was very intriguing. good blend of science

A great book for become a more attractive version of yourself

This is an excellent book about sexual attraction in both men and women. The writer goes into detail of proven attributes of attractiveness and backs it up with scientific research and evidence. In the book, one of the major chapters
goes into detail of where to meet someone, how to start the conversation and how to portray attractive body language, which is something new I learnt.

I thoroughly enjoyed the part of "Window to the soul" as the writer shows how the eyes show interest to a person and
the final chapter on "The strangest truths" was an eye opener.

Overall, this is a great book if you want to know how to attract the opposite sex and become a more attractive version of yourself. I would advise you to read this book with an open mind. Highly recommended.
