Combines hard work with effective skills
By Lauren McPhil
Have only been using this review book for a few days, but so far I like it. My four star review will be edited once I finish, but this review guide is inclusive to all levels of students. The author provides good resources and doesn't tell you there is only one way to get your optimal score. It includes vocabulary lists to study, common prefixes, and double meaning words to focus on for students that aren't as well read. She breaks the questions down with great explanations, which is a nice. Also, the strategie for attacking each question varies slightly, so the author teaches the test taker how to apply there test taking skills with their previously acquired knowledge. I will report how my critical reading score improves, but I feel like I'm learning a lot. Some books can be overwhelming, but this book can be taken on with hard work and focus. I like how the author doesn't claim if you read her review book your guaranteed a great score like some others, instead she tells you how to effectively work hard to get the score your aiming for. So far so good.

SAT CR 680 in January, 690 in March - something was going consistently wrong with the CR techniques when other two scores were 800 or near 800. Read good reviews of this book then bought this book for May testing, three weeks prior to test date - bingo! Score jumped to desired 750. Do I say more? Amazing improvement after studying this book!!!
By MaryMac
When my son was a sophomore, his score on the reading section of the PSAT was at the 92nd percentile. I read the reviews of this book and thought it would help him. After he studied the book, I could tell from the practice tests he took that he was really improving! We just got back his PSAT score for this year and he is in the 99th percentile! He only missed 1 out of 47 questions!!! Thank you!!

Making Nice, by Elizah J. Davis

Twins Blake and Bianca Dunlap have always been there for each other, ready to lend support and make sacrifices. Blake can't imagine a bigger sacrifice than getting along with Bianca's fianc, Matt. Matt turns out to be more than the meathead Blake had dismissed him as, but Matt's best friend, Ryan Everett, is a different story. Ryan seems intent on being an insufferable jerk as often as possible. The fact that Blake is undeniably attracted to Ryan only makes the whole situation more annoying.

Since they'll all be stuck together for the long haul, Blake is determined to make nice. Unfortunately he overshoots, and he and Ryan end up on much friendlier terms than Blake intended. While he and Ryan agree there's no harm in having a strings-free fling, that changes when Matt and Bianca find out about it. As more complications arise, Blake and Ryan become more determined to do what it takes to avoid letting them down. But the only way to ensure getting through a joyous wedding and avoiding the questions neither of them wants to answer is to convince everyone it's something more.

An Absorbing Story and Must Read!
By Melanie Marshall
Another Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.com Sammy review;

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

“This is my friend Ryan. He made pecan pie. I hope that’s okay with everyone?”

“I’m allergic to nuts,” Blake muttered. Or evidently said loudly enough for everyone to hear. Ryan snorted, Bianca glared, Matt looked like a confused puppy, and his mom gave him a questioning look and said, “Pecan is your favorite.”

“It’s a recent allergy,” Blake said weakly.

Ryan walked past him to set the pie on the counter and whispered, “Don’t worry. My nuts are hypoallergenic.”

Being a twin is special, and when Blake’s twin Bianca meets Matt and falls madly in love with him, it’s imperative that Blake approves. The thing is, Matt isn’t so bad. His friend, Ryan, on the other hand, is a completely different story.

Granted, they get off on the wrong foot – meaning that Ryan is pretty much foot in mouth. He can’t help himself, the stupid comments just keep pouring out.

Sometimes, though, foes make the best lovers, and Blake and Ryan teeter on the line of hate, to tolerance, to tolerating sleeping together because sex is about the only time they don’t drive each other mad. They decide to keep their arrangement a secret, and as with all secrets, things get mucked up when a secret becomes common knowledge.

Making Nice is a lot more than enemies becoming lovers, it extends to a relationship building between two people who are both equally flawed and live up close and personal with their worst enemies – themselves.

“I’m just saying, I guess—make sure you’re paying attention. Blake has a tendency, if he doesn’t think he can get what he wants, to take what he can get.”

Ryan forced a smile, though it felt like he’d just been insulted. “Which one am I, then? What he wants or what he can get?”

I was a bit nervous at first. This is a fairly long book and it’s a new author for me, but I loved the idea for the plot and went in with an open mind. Elizah Davis did not disappoint.

I’ve said before that one of the things I love is good banter between characters. I understand that it’s not something that should happen in every story, that’d get boring, but I just love it when an author can make characters duel with words and pull the reader into it. This was the case for Blake and Ryan. They truly had a banter that lasted even after their relationship progressed, and it made their relationship that much sweeter for me.

To a certain extent, the blurb really doesn’t do the story justice. It’s so much more than this hate-sex type of deal. The reason the story is the length it is, at least in my opinion, is because you get to see their relationship build. It’s not an automatic hate one day, love the next – they kind of fall into it. It’s a progression that you can visibly watch throughout the chapters.

I also enjoyed the side characters. There were a decent number of them, but I never got mixed up on who was who or who had been told what. They had personality and life that added to the story for me. I do wish we’d gotten to hear more about Ryan’s family life, as most of it deals with Blake’s, but that was just something that would’ve been a nice addition.

I will say that the thing some people may struggle with here are communication issues – Ryan and Blake certainly have them. The reason it didn’t bother me in this story is because I saw it as a natural byproduct of their relationship and its roots, and also a growing pain that they needed to overcome. The author doesn’t make this a moot point though, and at one point outwardly acknowledges that communication is probably more beneficial for them. To me, their communication issues made sense, it worked.

Also, I really adore the cover art by Paul Richmond. It fits the story quite well, right down to the check list (with friends crossed out, which totally made me smile after reading the story).

A Must read
By Crystal's Many Reviewers
So many romances happen instantly these days. Within a week or a month, a couple is already to the I-do stage. I prefer books that make the relationship take time and grow. And this book definitely fits the bill.

Blake has some worries. His twin sister who is his best friend has fallen in love. And this just might be ‘the guy’. As she turns more and more toward Matt and shares less with him, his whole world shifts. Though not nessarily for the better. At poker night over at Matt’s house, he comes face to face with Ryan, who insults him at every turn.

Ryan doesn’t understand why every time he opens his mouth around Blake, something demeaning or rude pops out. He doesn’t do that! And yet, with Blake, he does. Every single time. One drunken night turns into the hottest sex either of them have had and next thing they know it, they set up booty calls, trying desperately to keep the information from Matt, Ryan’s best friend, almost brother, and Bianca, Blake’s twin. As Matt lives across the road from Ryan, the chances of keeping it quiet are nill, but they blunder on.

Until everyone finds out.

I loved this story. From Ryan’s unerring foot-in-mouth disease to Blake’s snarky comebacks to Ryan’s opinionated cat. The fact both of these men had no idea how to do a relationship and wanted it, but were afraid to say so, was very endearing, because I so know the feeling.

To me, the only part of the book I really didn’t like was Bianca. She came across as very self-involved and full of herself most of the time.

But that didn’t stop me from giving this 5 stars. I will definitely be rereading it and looking for more from this author.

Love and hate are both strong emotions. They are two authors often combine to make some pretty powerful stories. This is the exact scenario we find in Making Nice by Elizah J. Davis. Two men who couldn’t be more different or antagonistic to each other finding a common ground in lust and eventually finding more.

Some people love this dynamic. Some people hate it. For me, it is completely based on whether the author can make me believe the pairing. Davis is able to do just that.

We see two love stories in Making Nice. First, is the existing familial and twin bond between the main character Blake and his twin sister Bianca (no this is NOT twincest. They are best friends). We also watch the relationship between Blake and his future brother-in-law’s best friend, Ryan (and therein lies the enemies-to-lovers aspect).

This isn’t a sweet, everything’s perfect, let’s ride off into the sunset type story. Blake and Ryan mess up… repeatedly. They are guys who can’t communicate to save their lives. They are guys who don’t want to put themselves “out there” for potential hurt. They are guys who would rather be pissed than talk. However, I didn’t feel like I was reading about adolescents. I sort of felt like I was reading about how I handle conflict sometimes.

On the Blake and Biana front, we get to watch the evolution of family and friendship. We get to see their relationship strain and ultimately grow stronger.

I enjoyed the time I spent in Blake and Ryan’s world and would be happy to read more from this author.

The photos in this edition are black and white.

If you want to modify your carburetor-equipped vehicle for performance today, you can choose from three major carburetor families - Holley, Demon, and Edelbrock. While Holley and Holley-style carburetors like Demon have been popular for years with their well documented successes and quirks, there has never before been a book covering the ins and outs of the emerging Edelbrock line of carburetors.

How to Rebuild and Modify Carter/Edelbrock Carburetors reflects the emergence of Edelbrock carburetors as the predominant Carter-style carburetors in the market today. A revision of the best-selling title Super Tuning and Modifying Carter Carburetors, this book contains more than 300 color photos, illustrations, and diagrams, covering rebuilding, tuning, and modifying Carter and Edelbrock carburetors.

This book also features the history of Carter as well as the history of the AFB and the AVS since the purchase by Edelbrock. Author David Emanuel outlines carburetor types, gives a thorough look at carb selection and carb function, and offers detailed information on modifications, tuning, and rebuilding Carter/Edelbrock carburetors.

A history of, rather than how to, rebuild Carterbrocks
By Ruben
This book is a good source of knowledge on the history of Carter and Edelbrock carburetors. The book deals primarily with the Carter Thermo-quad, Edelebrock AFB and AVS, and Will Carter Four Barrel (WCFB). Early chapters deal with the history of Carter and it's subsequent merging into modern day Edelbrock. Alot of good info for those not familiar with carbs, especially TQ's and AFB/AVS. Those looking for a step by step book would probably be best served with a technical manual on the carb though. Rebuilding is reserved for the last chapter or two and is, while the pictures are good, the text is a little lite in that area.

Good overview of topic, but lacking detail
By Steven S.
This book covered the history of the Carter/Edelbrock companies and the variety of carburetor products they have offered. I personally was more interested in getting my carburetor tuned and less about history and how a carburetor works...although the latter is useful information to the uneducated. The information on tuning was pretty weak. There just wasn't a good step-by-step procedure laid out. I did better by downloading the "owner's manual" on line. However, if interested in rebuilding your carburetor, the step-by-step with color pictures is nice.

From Achilles rampant on the fields of Troy, to the gods at sport on Mount Olympus; from Icarus flying too close to the sun, to the superhuman feats of Heracles, Theseus, and the wily Odysseus, these timeless tales exert an eternal fascination and inspiration that have endured for millennia and influenced cultures from ancient to modern.

Beginning at the dawn of human civilization, when the Titan Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and offered mankind hope, the reader is immediately immersed in the majestic, magical, and mythical world of the Greek gods and heroes. As the tales unfold, renowned classicist Robin Waterfield, joined by his wife, writer Kathryn Waterfield, creates a sweeping panorama of the romance, intrigues, heroism, humour, sensuality, and brutality of the Greek myths and legends.

The terrible curse that plagued the royal houses of Mycenae and Thebes, Jason and the golden fleece, Perseus and the dread Gorgon, the wooden horse and the sack of Troy--these amazing stories have influenced art and literature from the Iron Age to the present day. And far from being just a treasure trove of amazing tales, The Greek Myths is a catalogue of Greek myth in art through the ages, and a notable work of literature in its own right.

Too many errors.
By Brittany Villa
It was very informative but there were a lot of errors. I understand we are all human and we make mistakes but in Chapter three tha second paragraph is repeated in the third paragraph. It's a massive publishing error that should have been caught. Errors like that turn me off of books.

Great Read

Great an extremely informative - not written academically, either, which makes the content much more accessible. It's nice to see Classical Greek mythology so colorfully presented.

About the Author
Sara Alexi was born in Oxford, England. She has traveled widely and now spends much of her time in a tiny rural village in the Peloponnese, in Greece, where she is (very slowly!) renovating a ruined stone farmhouse, whilst observing the Greek way of life and absorbing the culture, to enrich her vision for both writing and painting.

Sara began writing later in life. In school English lessons were a time of confusion, books indecipherable hieroglyphics. Dyslexia was not well understood then and no support was available. The joy of reading and writing were canceled by the teacher's red pen ...

Despite her dyslexia Sara qualified as a psychotherapist and ran her own practice for years. Her artistic nature was, at that time, confined to painting and she exhibited widely.

In a casual conversation with a client she discovered that Agatha Christie, Jules Verne and Hans Christian Andersen were all dyslexic, and Sara's perspective changed. The world of fiction opened to her with this shift in perception and she has been a prolific writer ever since.

Her 'Greek Village Series' has been very well received and provides a keenly observed, compassionate insight into the Greek people and culture, and the human condition in general. Watch this space for the next in the series, coming soon!

A story of friendship and life
By BrendaJane
This was a delightful glimpse into the lives of two very different people who became friends and were both better for it. A rare friendship that changed their lives and maybe changed mine a bit too. (It was brought to my attention that everyone has their own story and if you don't know what it is, don't assume you know them or dare to judge them.)
There were editing problems and problems with present tense and sometimes the flow was interrupted with a tiny bit of confusion but the story itself was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It took me into a world I didn't know existed as well as to a place I would love to visit one day. Her Greece sounds heavenly but not perfect, just like the real world. With a bit of tweaking this would be a fabulous book, as it is, it is an eye-opening, uplifting and wonderful book. I loved it and would recommend it.

The Illegal Gardener
By lykeda
I am very particular about books I read and more often than not,I start a book, read a few pages and then stop reading it because it doesn't hold my interest. However, The Illegal Gardener kept me interested and captivated from page one to the end. I actually hated to have the story end.

The characters were so interesting and the friendship that developed was fascinating. I also could almost feel the mood and sights and sounds of Greece.

Great job,Sara Alexi---keep up the good work and I look forward to reading another of your books.

The Illegal Gardner -- good read
By masc
This was a very enjoyable story. It's a story of 2 people who have a solid friendship - it was just that, a friendship.
The historical aspect was interesting and the author showed how difficult life was for some at that time. But the main characters were able to overcome the obstacles and it was a very real story.
It is written very well, even with the few grammatical errors. The ending was unpredictable & a great end to a great story.

Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals

For many IT organizations, today’s greatest challenge is to drive more value, efficiency, and utilization from data centers. Virtualization is the best way to meet this challenge. Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals brings together the comprehensive knowledge Cisco professionals need to apply virtualization throughout their data center environments. Leading data center expert Gustavo A. A. Santana thoroughly explores all components of an end-to-end data center virtualization solution, including networking, storage, servers, operating systems, application optimization, and security. Rather than focusing on a single product or technology, he explores product capabilities as interoperable design tools that can be combined and integrated with other solutions, including VMware vSphere. With the author’s guidance, you’ll learn how to define and implement highly-efficient architectures for new, expanded, or retrofit data center projects. By doing so, you can deliver agile application provisioning without purchasing unnecessary infrastructure, and establish a strong foundation for new cloud computing and IT-as-a-service initiatives. Throughout, Santana illuminates key theoretical concepts through realistic use cases, real-world designs, illustrative configuration examples, and verification outputs. Appendixes provide valuable reference information, including relevant Cisco data center products and CLI principles for IOS and NX-OS. With this approach, Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals will be an indispensable resource for anyone preparing for the CCNA Data Center, CCNP Data Center, or CCIE Data Center
certification exams.

Excellent Introduction to Data Center Networking
By Jeff Doyle
I keep a list of "recommended reading" books to give to clients and students. Someone pointed me to this book and said it should be on my list, so I bought a copy. Within just a few chapters I knew this one would be near the top of my list. Santana explains the fundamentals in a clear, well-organized, personable, and often funny style. If you are starting out in networking and want to understand the unique challenges of data centers, this is the place to start. Well done, sir!

Awesome Book
By Rico Pereira
I've been looking for Data Center material that could help me getting in touch with these technologies for such a long time. I've always felt the DC world was too advanced for me because of the distinct protocols and the lack of readings for beginners. This book takes us from VLANs to Cloud Computing in an engaging and logical way. I especially enjoyed the "evolution" chapters because of the vendor-independent concepts concerning networking, storage, and server technologies. Great read!

Fantastic Design Book
By Keith
I found this book to be easier to read than most Cisco Press books. It's well written. This book is very useful for understanding how new visualization techniques work and where they fit into your network. The book is great on its own, but I would also recommend it if you plan on buying the NX-OS and Cisco Nexus Switching book. It gives much of the context and background information that seems to be lacking from 'NX-OS and Cisco Nexus Switching'.

Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir, by Lauren Slater

"The beauty of Lauren Slater's prose is shocking," said Newsday about Welcome to My Country, and now, in this powerful and provocative new book, Slater brilliantly explores a mind, a body, and a life under siege. Diag-nosed as a child with a strange illness, brought up in a family given to fantasy and ambition, Lauren Slater developed seizures, auras, neurological disturbances--and an ability to lie. In Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir, Slater blends a coming-of-age story with an electrifying exploration of the nature of truth, and of whether it is ever possible to tell--or to know--the facts about a self, a human being, a life.

Lying chronicles the doctors, the tests, the seizures, the family embarrassments, even as it explores a sensitive child's illness as both metaphor and a means of attention-getting--a human being's susceptibility to malady, and to storytelling as an act of healing and as part of the quest for love. This mesmerizing memoir openly questions the reliability of memoir itself, the trickiness of the mind in perceiving reality, the slippery nature of illness and diagnosis--the shifting perceptions and images of who we are and what, for God's sake, is the matter with us.

In Lying, Lauren Slater forces us to redraw the boundary between what we know as fact and what we believe we create as fiction. Here a young woman discovers not only what plagues her but also what heals her--the birth of sensuality, her creativity as an artist--in a book that reaffirms how a fine writer can reveal what is common to us all in the course of telling her own unique story.

About Welcome to My Country, the San Francisco Chronicle said, "Every page brims with beautifully rendered images of thoughts, feelings, emotional states." The same can be said about Lying: A Metaphorical Memoir.

Amazon.com Review
One has good reason to be suspicious of a book that calls itself a "metaphorical memoir." If a metaphor substitutes one thing for another to which it's not ordinarily related, and a memoir relates the personal experiences of the author, then a metaphorical memoir would be... well, lying, if we're going to get technical about it. Or it could be Lying, in which case, hold that judgment and lay all categories aside: here is a book so stunningly contrary it deserves a whole genre to itself.

Lauren Slater may have grown up with epilepsy. Or she may have Munchausen syndrome, "also called factitious illness," also called lying. Or, quite possibly, she has never had any of the above, and all her exquisite evocations of auras and grand mal seizures are merely well-researched symbolic descriptions of her psychic state. In a chapter that's disguised as an extended letter to her editor (and impishly titled "How to Market This Book") she defends her decision to call the work nonfiction: Why is what we feel less true than what is? Supposing I simply feel like an epileptic, a spastic person, one with a shivering brain; supposing I have chosen epilepsy because it is the most accurate conduit to convey my psyche to you? Would this not still be a memoir, my memoir? Slater is peering down a slippery slope here, and for all its manifest brilliance, the pyrotechnics of its prose, reading Lying can be an unnerving experience--sort of like hanging out with a compulsive liar, actually. (It's no help to find out that "after all, a lot, or at least some, or at least a few, of the literal facts are accurate.")

But if Slater is playing with our heads, she's not doing so for fashionable postmodern reasons. Lying's bag of tricks emerges from some complex and deeply felt ideas about form, reality, and consciousness itself--and what's more, it's an extraordinary memoir, "true" or not. A field full of nuns, their windblown habits tipping them over into the snow; an electric brain stimulator that makes a patient see colors and taste her own words; Slater rolling in mounds of Barbadian sugar and then running back to her mother, coated like candy--who cares whether any of these actually happened? In the end, Lying is fundamentally true, just as a great novel or indeed any great work of art is true: in a way that has nothing to do with fact. --Mary Park

From Publishers Weekly
If fact is shaded with metaphor, does it become fiction? In a memoir that raises that question, the author of Prozac Diary and Welcome to My Country narrates a life marked by a disease she may or may not actually have. "I have epilepsy," she writes in the first chapter. "Or I feel I have epilepsy. Or I wish I had epilepsy, so I could find a way of explaining the dirty, spastic glittering place I had in my mother's heart." But was it epilepsy, or depression, or bipolar disorder, or Munchausen syndrome, or none of the above? And did Slater really undergo a corpus callostomy operation separating her right and left brain? Questions of authenticity aside, at its core this memoir touchingly describes the coming of age of a young girl who relies on illness to gain the attention of her narcissistic mother and ineffectual father, and who must find a way to navigate her parents' often vicious marriage and her own troubled adolescence. Slater, who says she must take anticonvulsant medication daily, had her first seizure the summer she turned 10. The symptoms of epilepsy function as a vehicle for her most potently written passages: dazzling hallucinations, teeth-grinding spasms, exuberant exaggerations. As often happens to those with illness, Slater moves from diagnosis to misdiagnosis to cure to redefinition and eventually to acceptance. In her afterword, the author explains that for personal and philosophical reasons, she had no choice but to transcribe her life in "a slippery, playful, impish, exasperating text, shaped, if it could be, like a question mark." The skill with which she achieves her goal reflects unusual insight. Agent, Kim Witherspoon. (June)

From Booklist
Slater, author of Prozac Diary (1998), marshals her literary virtuosity and dual perspective as a psychologist who has suffered mental disorders in this highly provocative inquiry into the nature of epilepsy. She describes her own epileptic seizures with poetic intensity, then declares that "some epileptics are liars," and, indeed, many episodes feel more dramatized than documented. She lyrically recounts her spiritual awakening at a special school for epileptics run by nuns only to slyly observe that epileptics often harbor religious fixations. Slater then suggests that she actually had Munchausen syndrome, which induces sufferers to feign illnesses. Did she have an operation to separate the hemispheres of her brain, or is that a metaphor for her divided sense of self? Each anecdote is as enrapturing and disorienting as the auras, or "strange states," she experiences just before her seizures, and all are inspired by the same overarching question: Why is what we feel less true than what is? Slater's uncanny narrative subtly reveals the meshing of the factual with the emotional and the real with the imagined. Donna Seaman

Fascinating and engaging.
By smele
In "The Art of Time in Memoir", Sven Birkerts wrote that memoirs are works of restoration, "searching out recurrences and patterns, but also then allowing for the idea that pattern hints at a larger order . . . the memoirist researches this, using the self as subject, assembling the shards, riveting his impressions together word by word." This idea is perhaps vital in reading Lauren Slater's "Lying", for she openly admits to creating or altering the stories she tells about herself. There is the lie of Hayward Krieger, whom the introduction is credited to - yet Slater's Dr. Neu claims that Krieger does not exist. Does Dr. Neu exist, or is he another fabrication? Similar questions continue throughout the reading. Slater is not a memoirist who we can consider a reliable narrator, but that factual accuracy was never the point. Tto read Slater's novel is to feel as though you are experiencing the confusions and frustrations that she felt in her life.

Slater's style is experimental and effective. The first chapter is a single sentence: "I exaggerate." She chose to include letters and medical reports along with the narrative, giving us a look at her as perceived by others in her life. In this writing itself, Lying is effective in its use of imagery to pull in the reader, and Slater's writing and identity are persuasive and compelling. A scene standing out in my mind was her watching people on the bus. When they got up, she "sat in their seats and felt the way the foam cushions had molded to their specific shapes", she smelled an old man's hat and "studied the hair carefully . . . two silver strands of hair, with a masculine smell." Slater's ears pop and she feels cool air coming in through the bus window, and in this moment we are Lauren. She is honest about things that someone would not necessarily permit herself to be honest about. For instance, the contemplation about stealing babies, lying about having cancer, and having "an immediate affinity for [the penis]."

It does not matter so much if Slater's memoir is the truth in its entirety. It is her truth. We have been introduced to her life and her character. From what she has presented to us as readers, we are able to use this to interpret who she is. She states that she has given us her essence. Perhaps in a way, the candid admission that this memoir consists of lies makes her more honest than memoirists that embellish their truths (for instance, could Conroy truly have remember every intimate detail and conversation in "Stop-Time"?). Slater urges that the metaphors she uses "resonate in a heartfelt place we cannot dismiss", and that is the goal of her postmodern memoir. Truth can be complex, and Slater masterfully explores this idea.

This book is engaging and undoubtedly one of my favorite memoirs.

Lauren Slater's book, Lying, may very well be a work of genius. It is beautifully written and existentially profound. Anyone trying to understand his or her own complex behavior, or such behavior of a friend or loved one, will be engaged, encouraged, embraced by this book. If your experience has been such that you still struggle to find words capable of expressing the truth of your experience, this book may be a revelation. Amazing Trip Through a Fascinating Mind
By Amazon Customer
"Lying" takes the reader on a fantastical journey through a mind disturbed by epilepsy or maybe something else. The author experiments successfully not only with the concept of truth but point of view in telling the story. The author's syntax and vocabulary is straight-forward, which lets the narrative stand out. However, she also plays with style, as when she crafts the report of a doctor doing research on epilepsy.
The reader also gets an education about epilepsy, Munchausen syndrome and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Running Like a Girl, by Alexandra Heminsley

The inspiring, hilarious memoir of a “Bridget Jones-like writer” (The Washington Post) who transforms her life by learning to run, with stories of miserable defeat, complete victory, and learning to choose the right shoes.

When Alexandra Heminsley decided to take up running, she had hopes for a blissful runner’s high and immediate physical transformation. After eating three slices of toast with honey and spending ninety minutes creating the perfect playlist, she hit the streets—and failed spectacularly. The stories of her first runs turn on its head the common notion that we are all “born to run”—and exposes the truth about starting to run: it can be brutal.

Running Like a Girl tells the story of getting beyond the brutal part, how Alexandra makes running a part of her life, and reaps the rewards: not just the obvious things, like weight loss, health, and glowing skin; but self-confidence and immeasurable daily pleasure, along with a new closeness to her father—a marathon runner—and her brother, with whom she ultimately runs her first marathon.

But before her first marathon, she has to figure out the logistics of running: the intimidating questions from a young and arrogant sales assistant when she goes to buy her first running shoes, where to get decent bras for the larger bust, how not to freeze or get sunstroke, and what (and when) to eat before a run. She’s figured out what’s important (pockets) and what isn’t (appearance), and more.

For any woman who has ever run, wanted to run, tried to run, or failed to run (even if just around the block), Heminsley’s funny, warm, and motivational personal journey from nonathlete extraordinaire to someone who has completed five marathons is inspiring, entertaining, practical, and fun.

Heminsley did not run. Not ever. There was perhaps a shuffle here or there when absolutely necessary, but voluntarily putting on shoes and pounding the pavement? Absolutely not. Until one day, following a terrible breakup, Heminsley began to walk, and before long, with the encouragement of her family, simple walking morphed into running and then into competing in marathons. It’s not all medals and smiles at the finish line, though, as Heminsley humorously tackles the many thorny issues new runners encounter, from chafing to proper sports-bra fit to injury recovery to restroom emergencies. In this account of one woman’s transition from nonrunner to runner, the most important change that takes place is not losing weight or developing a more-fit physique, but rather the mental transition Heminsley makes to believing she is a runner. This is an amusing and inspiring account, sure to provide the gentle push a newbie runner needs. Helpful tips for first-time runners are appended. --Eve Gaus

Review
"Wannabe runners can live vicariously through the witty new memoir Running Like a Girl. It's packed with get-off-your-butt fitspo from the author's journey from 1-miler to marathoner." (SELF)

“In Running Like a Girl, Alexandra Heminsley has the courage to abandon her comfort zone and try something truly daunting and intimidating, running a marathon. In doing so she proves to herself that she is better than she thought she was and is capable of going further than she ever thought she ever could. These are invaluable life lessons that transcend running itself. You will enjoy this book—and learn and laugh in the processes—whether you run great distances, modest distances, or not at all.” (Dean Karnazes, runner and New York Times bestselling author)

"If you've ever wept WHY WOULD I WANT TO RUN?, your answer is here." (Caitlin Moran, author of How to Be a Woman)

"The morning after I finished this book, I got my running shoes on. Funny, wise, and inspirational, Alexandra Heminsley manages to make running seem not just possible, but life-affirming, liberating, and fun." (Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You)

‘This is not simply a book about running – it’s about discipline, self-knowledge and relationships, and should inspire even the most committed couch potato to strap on their trainers and run.’ (London Daily Mail)

"If the word marathon brings you out in a cold sweat, then this brilliantly titled book is the perfect antidote to running reluctance… It’s an honest and uplifting account, pitching practical know-how... with insights into the personal doubts and daunts of [Heminsley's] own life. There’s nothing preachy or smug about her stance. Instead, it’s an inspiring reminder of what we’re all capable of if we put our minds to it." (Marie Claire UK)

"A meditation (slash romp) on running, life and love. Penned in her own inimitable style, the book is a funny tread through the raft of body insecurities and mental anguish we all go through when we put on our trainers." (Grazia)

"[Heminsley's] honesty is winning: her first run is a disaster. . . . Her sketches of her family members are witty. What's truly excellent about this book, though, is its generosity." (London Observer)

“With humor and honesty, Elle UK books editor Heminsley details the anxiety and exhilaration she felt when she decided to try running in her mid-30s…For anyone contemplating running, Heminsley provides valuable insight into the mechanics and emotions inherent in the sport.” (Kirkus)

"[Heminsley is] a Bridget Jones-like writer. [Running Like a Girl provides] a realistic look at what it takes to transition from couch potato to amateur endurance athlete, flecked with self-deprecating anecdotes." (The Washington Post)

"The author is so insightful about how difficult it is to commit to a regular running routine--especially if you don't consider yourself a natural athlete. But Heminsley is also very honest about the emotional rewards of running: how much more confident and happy she feels because she does it regularly. Pick up Running Like a Girl: Notes on Learning to Run for a great read and plenty of practical tips." (Health Magazine)

Made my first few weeks of running easier and joyful!
By Corrie C. Mims
This book has made me laugh until I could hardly breathe and cry just as hard. I have always been the least athletic person in my family. I was the one with the best grades and the nerd, so I found excuses not to even try physically in PE at school. I told myself it just wasn't my "thing," even though I secretly envied those who were athletic and fit. I started a 5k training program a couple weeks ago, and heard myself saying inwardly, "You can't do this. You aren't physically strong enough." Being a cancer survivor and having a rare lung disease would be easy excuses for me, but they taught me that I am stronger than I thought- and now I want to be a runner. Just for me. I want to prove to myself that I can use my body to move me forward, not just be a victim and suffer its illnesses and pains. This book has given me such courage through the first two weeks of training, and I know I will reread it over and over.

Very inspirational book!
By mcw
I liked this book so much I bought two more copies for friends who, admittedly, already love to run. Still... I wanted them to know that I *get* it after reading this book. She is absolutely right in that we have everything we need to get moving. You just have to start somewhere. And after I read this book, I went running for the first time in more than 30 years... and survived to write this review!
