The FBI Killer, by Aphrodite Jones

Dirt poor, divorced, the mother of two young children, Susan Daniels Smith, 27, prayed for a handsome Prince Charming who would take her away from the squalor of her rural Kentucky community to live in romance and luxury. When a good-looking, big city FBI agent named Mark Putnam entered her life, Susan thought her prayers had been answered. She was dead wrong.

Their relationship began when Susan agreed to be Putnam's paid informant in an investigation of her ex-husband's criminal friends, then quickly grew into an illicit affair that consumed their lives for nearly two years – until she became pregnant and threatened to expose Putnam, ruining his career and his marriage. On June 8, 1989, Putnam took her for a drive into the hills to discuss her demands of marriage. She was never heard from again.

The FBI Killer recounts the bizarre events that forced Mark Putnam to confess to brutally killing his lover, then covering up his crime for over one year. The first agent in FBI history to be convicted of homicide, Putnam is now serving sixteen years in a federal prison.

A MUST Read!
By Amazon Customer
Aphrodite Jones has a talent for telling horrific stories in a compelling manor. Her narrative tells the facts of this story which are brutal and despicable yet I could not stop reading because her writing style held my interest completely. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know this story or anyone who just wants to be taken on an interesting ride. I've read it twice.

Read Joe Sharkey instead
By Elisabeth Young
There are two books about this same case and I would highly recommend you skip this version and read "Above Suspicion" by Joe Sharkey instead. I realize based on the other reviews here this will not be a popular view but I will take that risk. This is a terribly written book with nonessential information that at times makes no sense. For one example, check page 74 there is a paragraph that begins to explain that our "FBI Killer" Mark Putnam was not always seen as a loving father. It then goes on in great detail about Mark Putnam's sedan and his driving habits. I also found at that a hotel in London, KY serves shellfish which I was just dying to know. This book is rife with filler and does not compare at all to the work Sharkey did on his book. Not only that but he seems to have had way more cooperation from primaries in the case. I also would have been confused if I had never read the other book considering Jones just brings up Putnam's partner Poole as if we are to know who he is without even introducing him.

The true tragedy in this case would be the loss of Kathy Putnam from liver failure brought on from alcoholism no doubt from trying to stand by her husband in jail and raise her children. I was sorry to hear about Susan Smith's son as well. I don't think many people reading this understand that Putnam only got 16 years (reduced to 10) due to the fact that the only reason he was arrested and convicted was because of his own admission and the fact this apparently was not premeditated (he owned a gun, you know).

One last note for fans of the genre is if you Google Mark Putnam you can be treated to a recent picture of him noting he is a personal trainer in Florida touting a surgery he had on his old shoulder injury.

Don't let facts get in the way of a good story, Ms
By Norman W. Preston III
Don't let facts get in the way of a good story, Ms. Jones.

The book is filled with assumptions. The dialogue between the main characters in the book are not actual recorded conversations, but rather conversations the author recreated to slant the story in the direction she wants it to go . Do not read this if you are looking for an unbiased account of the case. The Joe Sharkey book, while not perfect, is ten times better than this one. The FBI Killer reads like a fiction piece written for a high school literature assignment.
