A Landmark Drama

Written in the late 1970s and debuting on Broadway in 1980, CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD began as Mark Medoff's response to actress Phyllis Frelich's comment that few plays portrayed deaf and hearing-impaired people in a realistic manner. The resulting play shattered stereotypes and, in a very real sense, changed the way that society in general regarded people with hearing disabilities.

The story centers on the relationship between hearing James Leeds and deaf Sarah Norman, the former a teacher, the later a defiant woman who declines to communicate in any way other than sign language. Initial hostility turns into an affair; the affair turns into a marriage--but in the wake of the marriage the couple is repeatedly torn between the deaf and hearing worlds and Sarah's sudden determination that no one shall speak for her but herself.

CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD, which won an arm-load of Tony Awards, was among the very few non-musical plays that toured extensively in the 1980s. I myself had the opportunity to see one such tour and was startled when a group seated near me walked out on the show. "I thought this was going to be a play about those dear little deaf children!" a woman in the group loudly complained. No, it isn't, and after seeing or reading it you will find it difficult to think about people with hearing disabilities--or any other disability for that matter--in quite the same way. It is powerful stuff.

Many non-theatre people find playscripts difficult to read, and in truth playscripts are a blueprint for directors and actors and not intended as reading material for the general public. This is preface to the very basic statement that some plays "read" well and some do not. I must note that many readers may find it difficult to imagine how it is staged and how the sign language and various translation modes work on stage. It will be a bit of a challenge to some, but even so I strongly recommend it.

Beware: no kindle cloud reader access for computers.

This is a useful text, with good information that is well presented;however, the kindle version is restricted from being used in the amazon kindle cloud reader. For a student who uses multiple computer lab stations, this is almost a deal breaker. Most lab stations do not allow installation of any third part software, which is the only way to use the book on a computer. It is available on most tablets that can download the amazon kindle app, but these are not always ideal for reading some of the small text. The kindle version will be worthy of a 5 star rating when it becomes available on the kindle cloud reader app.

Miss Manners combines wit and heavy information to make a winning solution and a book that you can't put down. (Unless you have company of course, not putting it down could result in an ettiquette faux-pas!) A marvelous writer, this book should be read by all. Maybe then then world could operate in a more gracious manner.

From birth until death (literally), Miss Manners has advice for every step of the way. From birth ("It is considerate if the baby sleeps in a way so that the visitors can see his face.") to marriage ("Brides who ramble on about 'the happiest day' do not really realize what they are talking about.") to death ("If your crochety old great uncle died and left you a fortune, you are supposed to look solemn, if not actually grieved.")

Nothing is left untouched. An 8-year-old's problems with eating asparagus (correctly), how to address wedding invitations, and the adventures of the Perfect family grace Miss Manners' charm and wit in a wonderfully engaging way

At Long Last

In my senior year of high school, I came across this book in the library and found that I couldn't put it down. The current librarian was retiring at the end of the year, and I had begged and pleaded with her to let me purchase the book. She told me how she was a Southern Belle in her youth, and how she and her friends were instructed to read it to learn proper etiquette. She smiled at me and said I could not buy the book from the library; and I was certain at that moment that I would never come across the book again (as it is out of print). When passing by the wedding planning section this week at the Barnes & Noble, I instantly remembered Miss Manners and looked for the book which I had so desperately wanted to read again. The Barnes & Noble, of course, did not carry it; but undeterred, I ran to my laptop as soon as I came home and searched for it here on Amazon. Within a few short days---I was not expecting it until next week) I received the package in the mail. Enclosed politely within the pages was a short and sweet little note asking that I leave feedback and promising accommodation should there be any complications; and so I thought I would share this little anecdote. The book is without question delightfully funny and an absolute must-read, for anyone inquiring assistance in the realm of etiquette; but the seller is also by far the most well-mannered I have come across on this site. The book is in wonderful condition and I would love to do business again. Thank you~

For grad students only

This book is seemingly written for those who already know Safavid history, of which I am not one. It presumes of the reader that they have a knowledge of the intricacies of Shiite doctrine, and the various ethnic groups that made up Iran from 1500 - 1730. If you don't, too bad, because it won't explain them.
Also, the author has strange word choices, which becomes aggravating (he always calls the government the "Safavid Project" for instance, like it was a science experiment, and he uses the word "discourse" in virtually every paragraph, as if talking about a friendly debate, when in reality he is discussing violent conflict).
For a beginner, it would be better to try "Iran Under the Safavids" by Roger Savory.

Full of unnecessary information

This book is overloaded in information of little consequence. It spends far too much time, possibly the majority of each chapter, simply discussing the marriage alliances of the upper class, at the expense of meaningful information about military campaigns, policy decisions, economics, efforts to convert the populace to Shi'ism, or the general society's lives. In the introduction, it mentions topics that other books on the Safavid Empire focus on too heavily such as the shadow government in the harem and the emergence of religious fundamentalism. I thought this meant it would discuss all those topics, but not obsessively. Instead, it spends little time focusing on any of those topics even though they are all important to the empire's history. Furthermore, the terminology in the text is unnecessary. He refers to people of Persian ethnicity as "Tajiks," even though this is a pejorative word that they would never use for themselves and the a separate Persophone nation called Tajikistan exists in the present, which could potentially confuse the reader. The empire is referred to as a "project" rather than a state just because it engaged in wars of conquest and often saw its borders change. In short, this is not the best use of money.

Great introduction to an important Iranian dynasty

This book a relatively young scholar has provided me with introductory information on this great but largely ignored Iranian dynasty. Safavids were of mixed origins Turkamans and Kurds and Greeks among other things. They have done much to revive ancient Persia's legacy and their period witnessed the zenith of the Persian art, architecture, weapon making, calligraphy and so on. They have left a profound legacy of Shia as an official religion in Iran. Safavids were great warriors too and have advanced style of hand-to-hand combat and battle strategies (renewed after introduction of the gunpowder by Europeans). Have not this great and powerful dynasty been, Ottoman Turks might have taken the Europe and this is largely under-appreciated fact.
