If This Be Shelter, Give Me Storm Away from the Hills

This groundbreaking novel is based on Mary Jane Ward's personal experiences in the Rockland State Hospital (here renamed Juniper Hill) after suffering a nervous breakdown. The story told is heartbreaking in its blunt simplicity - the lead character, Virginia, is not sure where she is at first, or why she is there, and the reasons for her confusion become painfully clear as one turns the pages.

The point of view changes abruptly from first to third-person, and this was disconcerting for me as a reader. This is the only reason that I've given the book four stars rather than five. As I consider it further, it may be that Ward chose this disjointed narrative deliberately, in order to establish Virginia's feeling of constantly having the world tilt around her.

I suspect that even this grim narrative of institutional life is rosier than the reality, but this is terrifying enough. Dangerous patients, nurses who have grown immune to the suffering around them, and draconian "therapies" all play a part in Virginia's experience. Just the luxury of having a dry bed to sleep in, or an uninterrupted period of private time in a powder room, is enough to give her joy and the illusion that she is getting close to freedom.

As the clouds start to clear for Virginia, the narrative becomes more crisp and I realized that she was inching back to the "real world." I was rooting for her to make a complete recovery and to resume her life.

Sadly, Mary Jane Ward was hospitalized three more times after the institutionalization that inspired this novel. I understand that she still managed to write several books, including two others that reference mental illness, and I am now keenly interested in those stories.

Powerful; engrossing; a fine literary achievement.

I found this novel beautifully written and engrossing to the last word. Why is it out of print? I hope it experiences rediscovery, and a revival. The author boldly chronicles the experience of her heroine, Virginia Cunningham, a gravely ill woman in a mental hospital, from the point of view of that woman, as she struggles with the violent side effects of shock treatment on her memory and her capacity to make sense of where she is and what is happening to her and why. The writing is uncompromisingly profound throughout. The effect ultimately is a triumph for the author in revealing a Hellish world in which institutional treatments for insanity come across as brutal and sadistic, and enough to drive any sane person crazy. Hunger, extreme cold, poor hygiene, neglect, bullying by other patients, forced feeding, forced baths, forced binding of patients and of course shock treatments ---- all this is presented in gruesome detail. What the heroine endures and suffers is terrifying. ----- Sources indicate that when the book was published, Ward denied that it was based on personal experience. But apparently it was indeed based on her own experience, and we are told that "The Snake Pit" played a role in getting reforms to mental health care in America. ------ I'm in awe of the novel's power. I'm in awe of the sustained experiment of telling it all from Virginia's point of view, no matter how disoriented or confused or delusional Virginia becomes. And I left the novel comforted by the author's achievement. I do hope this book will be republished and recirculated. (I love the movie based on it, but that is another story altogether.)

Snake Pit, a calssic

Excellent book to provide a behind the scenes look at the treatment mental illness in 1946. Need I say the treatment regimens were barbaric and even today we've replaced the surgical lobotomy with chemical lobotomy. The sad thrush is, in an age when we can conduct brain scans, it defies explanation how some psychiatrist can make a diagnosis in 15 minutes and prescribe a host of drugs, some of which patients become dependent on. So, have we really progressed. I blame the insurance companied and mental illness is a root cause of the rampant drug addiction in America. Thank a pharmaceutical rep who incentives the MD's. Snake Pit is not for the timid. It is a classic undercover look at a mental health system underfunded and a society that eliminated asylums in lieu of jails. Cops are not psychotherapists.

I am a mythology geek and loved this take. I also loved the picture painted of Hades hard but loving not to mention sexy. After reading this book I read the two others offered by this author I love his voice and spin. He takes a tired told out tell and gives it new life reminding the reader of awe the once inspired.

If you're like George Castanza coming up with witty retorts long after the conversation has ended, this book is for you. I found myself literally laughing out loud over and over again, wishing I had some of these one-liners locked and loaded when I've been hit with liberal idiocy.

I love Kurt's style and his impressive grasp of wit and humor. I pity anyone who should ever face him in court, or anywhere requiring a battle of wits -- he's got game ...

For the price, this book goes a long ways, and I want to recommend it to my friends, but to be honest, it's a little too racy, especially at the end. Ignore the last chapter, and it 5 stars. And don't get me wrong, if this were a movie this wouldn't even get an "R" rating, but that's hardly a high standard.

Give me something I can share with my whole family, and I'll buy everything you write.

Had never heard of this book before...

My daughter had to read this for school... so being the crazy parent who enjoys reading, I read it as well (because I read all the books my kids have to read). I really enjoyed it. Well written and descriptive it paints a detailed picture of the girls life from loved child, to orphan, to slave, woman and freedom. Worth the read. Not a long book.

This is a very thoughtful story linking colonialism, Christianity and slavery to patriarchy and marriage.. Freedom for women is actually denied within each of these institutions as women are always bought and sold.

The Icelandic Language

Icelandic, the official language of Iceland, is spoken by the island nation's entire population of just over 330,000. T�lva is a combination of two existing words, tala (number) and v�lva (a prophetess or magical seer) or, literally, "number prophet".

A good resource to start learning icelandic by speaking at once. Even though the discs contain audio files instead of mp3 files, the quality of the sound is excellent. I am checking the actual use of some expressions in nowadays. If you want to get into the Icelandic language quickly, this is a higly recommended resource that you should use in the first stage of learning Icelandic.

Great so far, my only critique is that this is taught as if you were a man. I wish there was a feminine version of this. It'll probably end up working but sounding funny to some Icelanders.
