Wow, great adventure, sex, and explosions

the book jewels for the taking is one of the best adventure books I have read in a long time. It is well written and tells the story that many soldiers can relate too. Very entertaining 5 stars.

The study of human body measurements on a comparative basis is known as anthropometrics. Its applicability to the design process is seen in the physical fit, or interface, between the human body and the various components of interior space.

Human Dimension and Interior Space is the first major anthropometrically based reference book of design standards for use by all those involved with the physical planning and detailing of interiors, including interior designers, architects, furniture designers, builders, industrial designers, and students of design. The use of anthropometric data, although no substitute for good design or sound professional judgment should be viewed as one of the many tools required in the design process. This comprehensive overview of anthropometrics consists of three parts.

The first part deals with the theory and application of anthropometrics and includes a special section dealing with physically disabled and elderly people. It provides the designer with the fundamentals of anthropometrics and a basic understanding of how interior design standards are established. The second part contains easy-to-read, illustrated anthropometric tables, which provide the most current data available on human body size, organized by age and percentile groupings. Also included is data relative to the range of joint motion and body sizes of children. The third part contains hundreds of dimensioned drawings, illustrating in plan and section the proper anthropometrically based relationship between user and space. The types of spaces range from residential and commercial to recreational and institutional, and all dimensions include metric conversions.

In the Epilogue, the authors challenge the interior design profession, the building industry, and the furniture manufacturer to seriously explore the problem of adjustability in design. They expose the fallacy of designing to accommodate the so-called average man, who, in fact, does not exist. Using government data, including studies prepared by Dr. Howard Stoudt, Dr. Albert Damon, and Dr. Ross McFarland, formerly of the Harvard School of Public Health, and Jean Roberts of the U.S. Public Health Service, Panero and Zelnik have devised a system of interior design reference standards, easily understood through a series of charts and situation drawings. With Human Dimension and Interior Space, these standards are now accessible to all designers of interior environments.

About the Author
Julius Panero, AIA, ASID, is a practicing architect, interior designer, and an associate professor of interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. He has taught interior design for the last twenty years and was the former chairperson of the Interior Design department at FIT. A graduate of Pratt Institute, where he received a bachelor of architecture's degree, and Columbia University, where he received a master of science degree in urban planning, Panero is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Interior Designers, and a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, London. Licensed to practice architecture in New York, Panero is a principal in the consulting firm of Panero Zelnik Associates, Architects/Interior Designers. He is also the author of Anatomy for Interior Designers and a contributing author to Time-Saver Standards. Martin Zelnik, AIA, ASID, NCARB, is a practicing architect, interior designer, and an assistant professor of interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where he has taught interior design for the last ten years. A graduate of Brandeis University, where he received a bachelor of fine arts degree, and Columbia University, where he earned a master of architecture degree, Zelnik is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the New York Society of Architects, the Interior Design Educators Council, and the American Society of Interior Designers. In examining the relationship between human dimension and dining spaces, the areas of most concern to the designer are the clearances around the table and the number of people a table of a particular size can accommodate. The clearance between the edge of the table and the wall or any other physical obstruction must at the very least accommodate two elements: (1) the space occupied by the chair and (2) the maximum body breadth of a person of a larger body size as he circulates between the chair an the wall. In dealing with the space occupied by the chair, it should be noted that its position, relative to the edge of the table, will change several times during the course of a meal. Towards the end of a meal, perhaps while the person is engaged in informal conversation or in an effort to change body posture, the chair may be extended farther from the table. As a person leaves the table, the chair may be located even farther away. Comfortable clearance should assume the chair to be at its farthest distance from the table.

Human Dimension & Interior Space provides information about interior space requirements and human dimensions that are indispensable to the beginning design student or the practicing professional. Its drawings and charts are clear, easy to understand and even easier to apply. It should be part of every design professional's library or student's required reading list. It is also refreshing to note that this book has integrated barrier free design/accessibility issues into each space type that is covered, and not made it a separate issue.

I couldn't live without it.

As a licensed Interior Designer I refer to this book frequently. To determine the space required for any activity from opening a file drawer to dining, watching a movie or simply removing an object from a shelf this book gives it to you straight with no fluff. It contains simple but indispensible scientific data for the 95th percentile and beyond. Whether you are a student or a professional, in Interior Design, Architecture or Industrial Design I highly recommend Human Dimension and Interior Space.

Poor substitute for "Time Saver Standards"

I bought this book as an inexpensive alternative to "TIME SAVER STANDARDS FOR INTERIOR DESIGN AND SPACE PLANNING" by Joseph Dechiara and found it to be a poor substitute. While this book has useful information on human dimensions it falls short when portraying ergonomic information. OK for an introductory book on the subject but "TIME SAVER STANDARDS..." is a far superior reference.

Read this just after first year of med school

We generally have a few clues about what we think might be a specialty choice but, this book lets one develop a core of arenas to sample on rotations. IN the second year, those rotations start being selected and knowing what electives and required rotations fit into one's "to be sampled" sorting experience provides better use of the extremely limited months of clinical training. Taylor's fifth edition suggests the value endures.

I used the first edition of this to find my specialty for decades of work and bought this one to give to my son-in-law next month as his first-year of medical school ends. I recommend it for everyone - too often the pyramid program leaves young doctors wondering where to find a second choice - those who started with this book may understand their options more personally.

Phase 1 was very helpful, and was organized with soul searching questions. Questions helping the reader decide if you are more a generalist than a specialist was very useful.

I really like how she asked physcians in each field what they liked and didn't like about their field. "what would they tell a medical student pursuing their field?" was also a great tool.

This book was somewhat helpful, though I don't think there's anything in it you can't get from searching around online and reading SDN forums, for example.

Also, I was not scrupulously fact-checking, but one allegation in the book - that a program telling an applicant she is ranked first is a violation, and one should not want to go to such an unethical place - irked me. That is not true - applicants and programs are allowed to express interest in each other, there is no violation unless one asks the other how they are ranked.

A well written guide!

The information was easy to read and very helpful. Being new to the D7100 I needed to find how to take advantage of the camera's capabilities. This manual was most helpful. It got me up and running in an hour of reading and working with the camera. Still have lots to learn but I'm already producing pictures I can share without explanation or excuses. Glad I bought it!

About the Author
Kenneth Koch has published many volumes of poetry, including New Addresses, Straits and One Train. He was awarded the Bollingen Prize for Poetry in 1995, in 1996 he received the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry awarded by the Library of Congress, and he received the first Phi Beta Kappa Poetry award in November of 2001. His short plays, many of them produced off- and off-off-Broadway, are collected in The Gold Standard: A Book of Plays. He has also written several books about poetry, including Wishes, Lies, and Dreams; Rose, Where Did You Get That Red?; and, most recently, Making Your Own Days: The Pleasures of Reading and Writing Poetry. He taught undergraduates at Columbia University for many years. He died in 2002.

Written with Reverence and Fun

Mr. Koch will not underestimate children. He will not talk down, dumb down, water down, because a passion for the subject matter animates this book as it must animate his instruction. He carefully documents and shares children's work as if it is as important as the poetry that inspired it.
Like anything truly sublime, the unspoken lesson enlivens this book . If you really share what you love with students, guide them instead of showing them, ask instead of telling, and treat their products with the respect you'd give a visiting artist, they will produce art as amazing as Mr. Koch's students did.
Forget teaching poetry to children- teach poetry instead. Take the concept and apply it to all creative acts. Teach art from great and challenging art. Teach music from powerful, sophisticated music. They can not only take it, they'll take it and keep it.

Not Just For Kids

This excellent book seems to be a missing link in writing instruction. Other books provide somewhat mechanical methods for generating writing ideas, but Koch's book leads the reader into natural lines of thought which connect the reader with his or her experience of life, experience from which the writing must flow. I am pretty sure this would work for any kind of writing and is not limited to poetry. Don't be too proud to use this book on yourself!

A Must-Read For All Teachers No Matter What They Teach

I've been pruning my bookcases - all ten of them. Today I came upon this book along with "Wishes, Lies, and Dreams" As I held them in my hand, I was head-spun back to the late 1970's and my first teaching assignments. I did a stint at a middle school in Jersey City and then at a high school on an island in the South Pacific - worlds apart and yet similar in so many ways.

In college I never took an education course and I walked into each school with no prep of any kind. I was assigned to teach English, meaning writing and reading. Because the schools were private, I was given more freedom than any teacher could imagine in today's performance-assessed environment.

I'm not sure how I came across Koch's books but they quickly became pivotal to my teaching. I'm wasn't a poet back then and I'm still not now, so it wasn't so much the poetry of his books that impacted me as his approach to teaching which was grounded in the deepest kind of respect for his students' potential - as learners and as creators. His willingness to challenge through seemingly wild experimentation. His encouraging students to see, to notice, to feel, to care about their world.

Inspired by his books, I taught my students to write poetry. And they responded with the same generosity and enthusiasm as Koch's students. I still have those poems, now collected in a binder. They are the wishes, lies and dreams of young people from the inner city of Jersey to the outer villages of Truk. It's all magical.

Kenneth Koch is one of my heroes and his books are enduring classics, especially for teachers - no matter what they teach.
