Edward Lee "Ted" Thorndike (August 31, 1874 - August 9, 1949) was an American psychologist who spent nearly his entire career at Teachers College, Columbia University. His work on animal behavior and the learning process led to the theory of connectionism and helped lay the scientific foundation for modern educational psychology. He also worked on solving industrial problems, such as employee exams and testing. He was a member of the board of the Psychological Corporation, and served as president of the American Psychological Association in 1912

William James (January 11, 1842 - August 26, 1910) was a pioneering American psychologist and philosopher who was trained as a physician. He was the first educator to offer a psychology course in the U.S. He wrote influential books on the young science of psychology, educational psychology, psychology of religious experience and mysticism, and on the philosophy of pragmatism. He was the brother of novelist Henry James and of diarist Alice James. In the summer of 1878, James married Alice Gibbens.

Thorndike was a pioneer not only in behaviorism and in studying learning, but also in using animals in psychology experiments. Thorndike was able to create a theory of learning based on his research with animals. His doctoral dissertation, "Animal Intelligence: An Experimental Study of the Associative Processes in Animals", was the first in psychology where the subjects were nonhumans. Thorndike was interested in whether animals could learn tasks through imitation or observation. Thorndike was able to create his own theory of learning. The puzzle box experiments were motivated in part by Thorndike's dislike for statements that animals made use of extraordinary faculties such as insight in their problem solving: "In the first place, most of the books do not give us a psychology, but rather a eulogy of animals. They have all been about animal intelligence, never about animal stupidity."

About the Author
Sam Kohl, the former owner (1965-2000) of the New York School of Dog Grooming, has been active in all phases of the pet industry since 1949. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of the Pet Industry, the American Dog Groomers Guild, Ltd., and the International Dog Education Association in Japan.

Mr. Kohl judged the very first national dog grooming contest in the United States. He represented the grooming industry on the New York City Board of Education Animal Advisory Commission.

He established the AARONCO Pet Products Company in 1987, publishing books on dog and cat grooming, boarding kennel management, as well as designing and marketing innovative tools to improve the life of the groomer/stylist.

Grooming Service Coordinator for a major pet company

I have used this book for many many years and rely heavily upon it for all of our groomers. The information is precise and the drawings are accurate. Kohl and Goldstein's book should be in the hands of ANY groomer wanting to advance their all-breed grooming skills. It should NEVER be 4-6 weeks out of print.

Did not send it in the best of shape

The book is kind of old and out dated as far as breed hair cuts go. The ppl that sent it to me used! Did not send it in the best of shape, certainly not worth the money. Especially when he paid 3.00 dollars for it at the salvation army!

A Useless Book for me

I am mainly interested in learning to groom and particularly interested in learning about clippers. This 416 page book has only 30 pages of general grooming information and it is superficial. It has less than 3 pages on clippers which was also superficial. If you already know how to groom and want information on specific breeds this book might be useful. For me it is totally useless.

Whether it is indeed the fastest-growing religion or not, many people will find this straightforward, clearly written primer a useful tool in helping them decide if this is their spiritual calling. McCoy makes clear from the outset that witchcraft is a religion whose "primary purpose is the worship of and the seeking of reunion with the being or beings who created all life." The first three chapters delineate the history of Wicca and are embedded with unexpected etymological nuggets, e.g. "mantra" is Sanskrit for "instrument of thought." Never stuffy or academic, the tone is suitable for teenagers and adults. Five chapters address material found in many other books: the sabbats and esbats, divination techniques, the place of ritual, etc. Chapter seven stresses ethical standards within the Craft and also emphasizes the need for mature personal responsibility. About the Author
Edain became a self-initiated Witch in 1981 and has been an active part of the Pagan community since her formal initiation into a large San Antonio coven in 1983. �Edain has researched alternative spiritualities since her teens, when she was first introduced to Kaballah, or Jewish mysticism. �Since that time, she has studied a variety of magickal paths including Celtic, Appalachian folk magick, and Curanderismo, a Mexican-American folk tradition. �Today, Edain is part of the Wittan Irish Pagan tradition, where she is a priestess of Brighid and an elder. �

This former woodwind player for the Lynchburg (VA) Symphony claims both the infamous feuding McCoy family of Kentucky and Sir Roger Williams, the seventeeth-century religious dissenter, as branches on her ethnically diverse family tree. �In her "real life," Edain works as a licensed stockbroker.

Edain is the author of fifteen books, including Bewitchments; Enchantments; and her most recent release, Ostara: Customs, Spells & Rituals for the Rites of Spring.

honestly, it's a wonderful book. many people find edain mccoy to be controversial, but i had owned this book before as a beginning witch and rereading it see hardly any issue. of course, there's cherry picking involved; but it really is a helpful book for a beginner.
the book came looking almost new. my only complaint is that there's two goodwill stickers (one on the front cover, and one on the back), and a thrift books sticker on the spine. as well as a written "april 14, 2006" which i don't really mind. i just wish there hadn't been stickers on it, but it's used so it's almost expected.

Beginners look no further . . .

I really liked this book as my introductory to Wicca. It was very thorough in detail covering all subjects I need to know to get started. The author has a sense of humor yet is very detail oriented in describing different aspects of the religion. She also provides many sources so that you can get more information on the topic. A very good beginner book.

it is not only very well written but extremely informative.
what do i like about it, well the careful information that the writter gives to you the reader within it.

first off, the authors do a fine job presenting to the reader an insightful history of street photography. they especially succeeded in explaining (or at least theorizing) how the various photographers came to create their respective photographic styles by finding sources of influence in modern art, architecture, and of course each other.
although there are other reviewers who believe the authors didn't give enough credit to hcb for shaping street photography into what it is today, it is important to note that even in the chapters which focus on the american photographers hcb is continuously cited as a major influence. just remember that this book is a history of street photography, not a bio of hcb!
i also agree with the reviewer who thought the photo placement within the book was a little inconvenient at times. but that minor problem does in no way detract from the overall value of such an insightful look at the history of street photography. enjoy!

it's the photos...

BYSTANDER embraces the social & cultural history of street photography. It touches upon the works of master photographers, yet leaves out so much about the actual photographs.
Trying to follow Meyerowitz's & Westerbeck's conversation, both obviously deeply emotional about the subject of street photography, simply went over my head in a rush of technical details & passionate positing as to why which photographer did what.
It is, however, the photographs in BYSTANDER that draw you back, again & again. The earliest ones that beg to have been enlarged, so rich in texture & composition; the later ones with their implicit social commentaries.
When we say that a picture is worth a thousand words, we're not kidding! Each & every photograph, even those that I couldn't make head nor tail, tell stories of our predecessors' lives & times, letting social history unravel before our eyes.
BYSTANDER is for everyone who loves to look at the past - the everyday, angular, shadow & light city past, through the window of a camera.

wonderful tiny drawings

This is a great book for first time drawers, or doodlers of any age. I use this to conduct art classes in cub scouts. I always enjoyed making very tiny drawings in the borders of my notebooks at school, and later as an adult I find myself still doodling during meetings. This book is for those of us who love to doodle. It shows you how to make the coolest little drawings of everything! There are hundreds of people, buildings, vehicles, boats, and animals to draw. And for learning how to draw, there is no better place to start than Ed Emberly! In addition to this book he has the best series of books for learning to draw called "Ed Emberl's Big Green Drawing Book" and he has orange, red, and purple too. He also has the books on specialized items like trains, or animals, but the big books pretty much cover it all along with this one. A perfect set of books for the young artist.

(When these books have been learned, and your artist is thinking of improving their skills they can try Mark Kistler's book next, then move on to books by Jack Hamm if they want to become a real artist someday.)

As an adult, I still love this book. I love it more now that it makes my son so happy that he can draw such neat things as castles, with dragons and knights in 2 minutes! A 5 year old or younger can easily draw many of the items in this book, as well as an doodle fan of any age. I give this my highest reccommendation!

Look back at fun and terrific drawing book

"Ed Emberly's Drawing Book: Make a World" really takes me back. From my earliest days in elementary school (early 80's), I remember this book. I did not then, nor do I know, have any appreciable artistic talent. Yet, this book made very common objects, people, and places very easy to draw with a fundamental step-by-step instruction. It gave even the least talented wanna-be artist an outlet for creative production. I simply loved this book. I had it checked out of the school library (with constant renewals) for almost an entire school year until the librarians put their foot down. My parents were kind enough to buy me my own copy, and I carried it with me every day. Even when I wasn't drawing, the setup of the book is creative enough so that a reader can almost come up with their own stories based on the drawings. I have no idea where my old copy of this book is, but you can be sure that I am psyched to buy it again.

Great for any age!

I am 13 years old and a pretty decent drawer, and I must say that when I first started drawing from this book I couldn't believe how well Ed Emberley illustrated it. I think that people of all ages can improve their drawing if they take a look at Ed Emberley's fantastic illustrations in this book. With wonderful colors and marvelous illustrations, I would recommend it to anyone.

Another great book by the Pythagorean Illuminati

This is one of a series of books by the Pythagorean Illuminati. Just like everything from them it is filled with amazing information and is written in an easy to read style. If you are at all interested in life's greatest mysteries you need to read all of the Illuminati's books. You should also check out their massive website armageddonconspiracy.co.uk and their facebook page Ancient Order of The Illuminati that links directly from the website.

This book begins by showing us that the official version of history is not the true history of the world. The true history of the world is known and made by powerful people conspiring in secret rooms far from public scrutiny. It then explains exactly how just 6000 people are able to rule the whole world. It also refutes contentious claims made about the Illuminati in the book "The Secret History of the World" by Jonathan Black.

Next the book examines some other books that are related to the Illuminati. The first is called "Etidorpha" by John Uri LLoyd. "Etidorpha" was written in 1895 and is inspired by the real life act of treachery of a member of the Illuminati who attempted to publicly reveal secret practices of the Illuminati. The next related books are all by the author David Lindsay.

My personal favorite part of the book was about the great philosopher and Illuminati grand master Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The book examines the conflict between Leibniz and Isaac Newton and explains how the logician Kurt Godel believed that Leibniz had discovered the answer to the riddle of life and that this answer was suppressed by sinister parties.

The Illuminati's books need to be read by all people who aren't satisfied with this world and know something is gravely wrong with society. They need to be read as soon as possible so we can begin the process of changing everything for the benefit of everybody. We are running out of time so read and get active!

excellent Gnostic book in the best modern spiritual series

I read this years ago as an article series, and do not recall verbatim, but think it is the best (along with his others and those of the two associated writers) introductory modern series on rationalist idealism in Classical Greek & Cartesian & German Idealist philosophy & postmodernism, including Pythagoreanism/Illumination, Platonism, Hermetism, Gnosticism, Leibnizianism, Hegelianism, formal & natural & social science, religion, and the arts, in this case on mathematics, gnosticism, history, literature, etc.
