Writer, historian, and activist Rebecca Solnit is the author of eighteen or so books on feminism, western and indigenous history, popular power, social change and insurrection, wandering and walking, hope and disaster, including the books�Men Explain Things to Me�and�Hope in the Dark, both also with Haymarket; a trilogy of atlases of American cities;�The Faraway Nearby;�A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster;�A Field Guide to Getting Lost;�Wanderlust: A History of Walking; and�River of Shadows, Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West�(for which she received a Guggenheim, the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism, and the Lannan Literary Award). Mandatory reading: An explanation for why men need to join (but not replace) women in the feminist movement.

I preordered this book with high expectations, having recently finished Men Explain Things To Me. And let me say: It surpassed them! This book is a phenomenal look into how men need to (also) be feminists. What I especially appreciated about this book is that it was even more aware of intersectionality and privilege than Men Explain Things To Me. Solnit shows much more awareness and appreciation for not only race, sex, cisgender, sexual orientation, class, age, religion, etc. ... she also calls out how these combine and interact. Another thing I like is how surprisingly relevant the book is, making references to occurrences as recent as Donald Trump's "Grab them by the pussy" comment.

Now, I do not want to call this a flawless book. Remember, it is a collection of essays, and while they generally build upon each other, you might get to the end of the book and think, "What kind of ending was that?" I found the first half of the book especially exceptional, with the second half being still great, but not *as* great, especially with final chapter. But Solnit, as always, is a magician with her writing, and will take you on a meandering, but laser-focused, journey through modern-day feminism.

About the Author
Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

Kathryn Pinna received her M.S. and Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught nutrition, food science, and human biology courses in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years and has also worked as an outpatient dietitian, Internet consultant, and freelance writer. Her other publications include the textbooks Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition for Health and Health Care. She is a registered dietitian and member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ellie Whitney, Ph.D. grew up in New York City and received her BA and PhD degrees in English and Biology at Harvard and Washington Universities. She taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, wrote newspaper columns on environmental matters for the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, and coauthored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which repeatedly reappear as new editions. She spen three decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology, and then cowrote PRICELESS FLORIDA: NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS AND NATIVE SPECIES (Pineapple Press, 2004). Now retired, and more concerned about climate change than any other issue, she volunteers full-time for the nonpartisan national nonprofit Citizens Climate Lobby.

Good text, good content, unacceptable typos

I used the print version of the 8th edition for a class a couple years ago, but I didn't think I'd use it again and sold it. Now I'm taking a clinical nutrition course that uses the same textbook, so I decided to try out the Kindle version and save some money. I understand that there are differences in formatting between a print and Kindle version of a textbook, but the level of typos in this text are awful. It couldn't possibly have been proofread before publishing. Some of the essential formulas for calculating nutritional needs are indecipherable because symbols like = and * have been somehown exchanged for 5's and other numbers. I've even noticed that entire segments are missing from the text. I hope they are only small segments, because I'll be really angry if it comes time to take the exams and they ask questions about information that was omitted from my Kindle textbook. My advice is to wait for publishers to work out the kinks in this, spend a little extra money on the print version, and sell the book back to Amazon when the course is over.

This textbook is actually a really good read. I have been enjoying the way the authors put this book together. What's convenient about it too is that at the end of each chapter, there is a Highlights section that goes into further detail about the subject and applies it to real life.

Small b/w paintings appear xeroxed, writings tedious and over intellectualized

I had looked forward to viewing the several paintings mentioned but there are only extremely poor b/w apparently xeroxed reproductions in small size revealing so little that the contents of the original paintings seems hidden and completely inaccessible within the book. The writing seems over intellectualized and tedious too. Why not write in a language that is accessible to a wider audience? If there are paintings, why not show them in a way they can be viewed? If the writing and paintings are to be inaccessible, why bother?
