What's more to say? This is the authoritative, the definitive volume for luminescence experiments from theory to all of the most useful applications. It is readable, dense, useful and indispensable if you do fluorescence, lifetime measurements, energy transfer studies, etc., etc.

A masterpiece

Of all the reference books I have on fluorescence spectroscopy, Dr. Lakowicz's book is the most comprehensive. It is a masterpiece. His book covers many aspects of fluorescent biological systems but it also treats inorganic systems. The foundations of fluorescence and fluorescence spectroscopy are quite comprehensive and very well covered. This is an excellent text and reference book for any person involved not only in bio-related research, but in any discipline involving fluorescence.

Nothing to do with rubbish collection of chapters made of friends and friends of friends and me-too sections, called books...

This is an excellent book, as all useful reference books should be, like those of the old times: well written with a unique logic line, uniform notations and plots. Among others, quite low price for the quality of paper and number of pages. I would even say that this is a very good introductory book: it worked well with me, an EE.

Using a Beagle Bone Black Rev C and was stuck making a LKM driver for it. Reading this book puts all the needed steps from the very basic to deep details like full compilation of the kernel and building a driver into perspective. Rodolfo even cites other books for deep dive help in very complex areas. All the information is presented well and clearly. A truly excellent book and Rodolfo keeps the content current in an ever changing sea of kernel updates. I HIGHLY recommend for a beginner or expert.

The straw bale book we have been waiting for!

I have been designing and building straw houses for a decade now, as well as teaching others how to do it. Across that time there have been a small handful of books on straw construction, each a great contribution in its time. But now we have what I feel is the book we have been waiting for: solid information in a well written format.
The authors are experienced builders with a common sense, grounded approach. Where most of the earlier books were coming out of the desert South West, this book specifically looks at the detailing needed in the colder and wetter parts of the world.
A wonderful contribution to the growing field of natural building. I recommend this book highly.

No Bale Left Unturned

This book now rockets into the forefront as the most complete straw bale book. It seems pretty much to be all here: Interested in mud floors - got it; Interested in earth plaster - It's here too. All the main building subjects are covered, often exhaustively. Once one strays from the 2x4 and block foundation, into alternative building, there are by definition a lot of options. There isn't a standard set of details yet for bales, which partially accounts for the length of the book.
The authors come from the enviro alternatives camp, but they aren't romantic about it. Expect some well deserved skepticism about the virtues of Nebraska style load-bearing walls in cold climates. On the other hand they leave the decision up to you. After spending 12 pages telling you why you might not want to build load bearing walls, they spend 22 more pages telling you how to do it (not to mention the countless other pages devoted to related topics).
This book covers the subject of framed straw bale walls more completely than any other thus far. This is an important addition to the literature. While the authors are driven in this direction by the realities of snow loads that are not experienced by all, those who live in wet climates, or wish to build multi-story houses will find much of use here also.

Fills a big gap

I am a construction manager (trained as an architect) working in more conventional styles of construction but I am itching to get more involved with alternative building systems. Straw bale has caught my attention and imagination for many years but the lack of information on damp climate straw bale construction has made me very hesitant to do more than read about it. This is a witty, candid look at the issues that must be considered if building with bales in a damp climate. My only complaint is that I would have liked to see more illustrations of building details- many concepts described could have been made clearer with more illustrations and many other concepts that I wanted to see clearly addressed were only skimmed over (such as what to do where the bale wall meets the roof and what are the recommended methods of firestopping). Overall, it is a very valuable resource but there is room for more information in a second edition!

Improving Your Life by Contemplating and Emulating Your Dog

Dogs Don't Bite When a Growl Will Do is the most unique book I have ever read about our relationship with his best friend. Almost any dog lover would adore this book, and fans of William Wegman's photographs of weimaraners will feel like they have died and gone to heaven.
There's no book quite like this one. Here's the structure: The book is divided into 67 brief lessons. Think of these as being the equivalent of what you might teach your dog, except that these lessons require you to think about dogs and apply what you learn to yourself: It's what you can teach yourself. The lessons are very much in the spirit of self-help books, especially those with a meditative or Zen orientation. Each chapter leads with a thought-provoking (and usually humorous quote) that encompasses the lesson frequently from a famous person ("My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to ninety-nine cents a can. That's almost seven dollars in dog money." -- Joel Weinstein). Many of the lessons are also introduced by an outstanding black-and-white photograph of a dog or dogs exhibiting the lesson's key element. I thought the book was worth its price just for the photographs. Each lesson then starts with an observation about a dog, usually belonging to the authors. The observation is then turned into a prescription for humans. In pursuing the prescriptions, the ancient Greek philosophers and other great thinkers are often cited. In the lesson that "Dogs Are Happy with a Simple Life," Alexander the Great and Diogenes are contrasted . . . and Diogenes gets the nod because he lived the simpler life (and outlived Alexander by almost three-fold in years). You also learn that the ancient Greek word for "cynic" means dog-like. Sometimes the erudition about dogs relates to scientific research. I was fascinated to learn a lot more about a dog's sense of smell.
The personal lessons mirror and build on one another like precise facets in an enormously complex snowflake or crystalline jewel. For instance, related to the subject of happiness are the following facets: Play; love; forgiving; good company; rejoicing in small pleasures; joy; hoping; celebration; not comparing themselves to others; being easily entertained; scratching itches; not sweating the small stuff; turning work into play; being satisfied; optimism; liking treats; licking problems; antidote to stress; shaking off pests; going with the flow; running free; laughing; and compassion.
After enjoying the book (with smiles, chuckles and loud laughs), I realized that its greatest pleasure was reminding me of wonderful experiences that I have had with dogs . . . and how much I appreciated the dogs as they improved my life. That reflection left me with a warm glow.
Although I have so far only read the book once, I suspect that upon rereading it I would notice other connections and pleasures. The book seems to draw upon the source of goodness in life itself.

My Dogs Ate My Book!

It's true. My dogs chewed off the binding of my beautiful, author inscribed, first edition of Dogs Don't Bite When a Growl Will Do. I always believed them to have good taste, and now I KNOW they do! Honestly, there are so many wonderful moments in Dogs Don't Bite that I can't settle on which one is my favorite. Like the greatest dog books we've all read, Dogs Don't Bite When a Growl Will Do is a book that teaches us truths about human nature, advises us on how to live with and love our human and animal friends, and offers us opportunities to laugh and cry (which is one of the best measures of a quality book, in my opinion). I also love that the book doesn't have to be read linearly. You can just pick out a chapter here or there to suit your needs. Today I will curl up on the couch with my dogs and my book, and we'll re-read "Dogs Know How to Love". It's just what we need to get our day going in the right direction!

"DOGS DON'T BITE WHEN A GROWL WILL DO is a hoot and a half...or should I say a yip and a yap. It's really so much fun to read and so sweet and wise at the same time. The pictures alone are worth the time and the captions are just gravy on the kibble.
This is a really fun and really sweet book. It made me laugh outloud in public, connecting me to my aliveness and, then, a couple of paragraphs later, I felt my deep gratitude and appreciation for how well we can teach each other if we just want to pay attention. The stories in the book, well-matched by some remarkable photographs and quotes from famous people detailing our debt to dogs, speak to universal needs and our collective desire to be good people and of service to each other while here on Earth. Just brilliant.

This is an affectionate skewering of your favorite literary figures of the last 2,000 years. Quality-of-execution-wise, Mallory Ortberg manages to keep everyone recognizably in character while translating their sentiments and their communication styles into contemporary terms and forms. Concept-wise, well...you obviously jumped right on something called "Texts From Jane Eyre." And it is freaking HILARIOUS.

A couple of these have appeared in her online work, but most were new to me. The few sections that were based on books I hadn't read, I was at least familiar enough with the basic premise/characters that I "got it." Medea, petulant Achilles, Pride & Predjudice, and E.A.Poe are, to my mind, instant short-form comedy classics.

One complaint. No, two complaints. TOO SHORT I NEED MORE, and also omg how did you not do "Vanity Fair"?! COME ON, that one is PERFECT. A sequel is required, with Vanity Fair. Also Ivanhoe.

Your go-to Christmas or birthday present for anyone bookish

I'm calling it now: This book is your go-to Christmas or birthday present for anyone bookish. It's the kind of book that I would probably never buy for myself - but I would definitely grab it for a literature-obsessed friend....and I would be delighted if someone got it for me.

The concept is simple - what if your favourite literary characters had cell phones and were able to text each other? What would they say? Would they use emoji? (Answer: YES).

As you can probably tell, this book is chock full of inside jokes. Most of the books that Ortberg turns into text form are classics - you'll see everything from Odysseus to Pride & Prejudice to The Great Gatsby here. But there are also a few newer adult and YA books, like The Hunger Games, where Ortberg has spun into a hilarious story of Peeta and his obsession with baking (note: the illustrations in this book are great and I'm pretty sure that the final version will be much prettier than my ARC!)

Ortberg has clearly read a lot more classics than I have, so there were definitely some "chapters" that I skimmed through simply because I didn't know the book. But for the books, authors and poets that I have read and loved, she pretty much hits the nail on the head and had me rolling on the floor. I definitely snorted out loud a few times, because of COURSE Catherine and Heathcliff would be texting overwhelmingly scary "I love yous" to each other. Of COURSE John Keats would be obsessing over the prettiness of an urn. And of course, Frank Churchill would be texting Emma about how much he doesn't like reserved people.

There are a ton more books that have been "textified" - some of which are REALLY fun (Babysitters Club, anyone?).

The Final Word:

The best way to experience Texts From Jane Eyre is to read it a text conversation at a time - it's not one where you'll sit on your couch and read straight through (well, you might. I did!) - instead, it's the kind of book you'll leave on your coffee table and leaf through when you need a quick laugh, and pull out for your other literary-minded friends at a party so that you can giggle out loud together.

Okay I guess

Really deserves 2.5, premise is solid enough, but the comedic style is repetitive. The "joke" is one person, or both, texting is crazy in some manner specific to the book or author. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, a few spot on moments, but the style stretches very thin. I recommend reading it to kill time, but not as a purchase.

Terry Lee Stone is a design management consultant, educator and writer based in Los Angeles. Stone currently consults to various design firms, including BMW Group Designworks USA. In addition to practicing professionally, Terry teaches at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). I have been reading in Misses Terry Lee Stone's work for some time now. I wanted this book and her sister book for some time.
The information in the book is priceless, but the print quality is horrible. I've seen porn magazine with a better print quality. Why this comparison? Because I am disappointed. The pictures in the book are so poorly printed that you can't read the text on them.

Great Product, EXCELLENT Condition

I could rate this product with 5 stars , the only reason I'm choosing 4 is because it took forever to arrive and I was needing it for my class which was a great inconvenient for me. If you have time enough to wait for the delivery you will be very satisfied with the product, in my opinion nothing to envy to a brand new book. Excellent product , thank you!

About the Author
Olivier de La Grandville is Visiting Professor in the Management Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University, a position he has held since 1988. He was Professor of Economics at the University of Geneva between 1978 and 2007 and is the author of seven books on a wide range of topics in microeconomics, macroeconomics and finance.
